I'm a tall guy with big hands (awkward start to the post I know).
I have tradiationally been an SG player and plan to eventually get a Les Paul.
Since this will be the biggest investment in musical gear ever, I want to make sure to get the correct neck. I've been playing the 60's and 50's necks in stores and seem to like the 50's neck when doing a side by side comparison.
1) Will I like the 50's neck. 2) Assuming my SG's are 60's necks, will I hate them after the purchase. 3) Are the differences minimal enough that it will just be a different feel from my other guitars? (I also have a Fender Lead II with a thick neck, but strings closer together and an Alvarez Acoustic which is about the same as the SG's)
Any thoughts appreciated.
Thx

I have a couple of "fat neck" historics with the 50's profile and then I have a 73 deluxe with a very flat/thin profile.
My experience is that as long as you can play both profiles with no issues, then it makes for nice variety. I'll admit, when I switch between the 2 profiles, the first minute either way makes me want to pick the other guitar back up. But, as my hand gets used to the new profile, I get just as "dialed in" as with the other neck size.
(BTW I am selling a beautiful 2003 AAA sunburst top standard with a medium 50's neck)
Let me know if you are interested....I'll send photos.
Regards, James

Thank you for the offer. I think my time frame is early 2009 if I buy new. (Here's another dilema). I am looking at the Standard which is now about $2,200 but I think I can get a good one used for $1750 maybe as low as $1500. I've never had a new guitar as I like the idea of getting a guitar with some character and of course $avings of buying used. However, I thought that this would be the one to get new because it would be a good heirloom and I would own the whole story behind it. I've got plenty of time to decide. I don't think I can stomach buying a vintage as I want to play it. So I think have to stay in the 1970's or newer if I buy used.

I play a Gibson R9 that has the chunky neck. I like the solid feel that the thicker neck has and some will argue that it gives a fatter tone. Personally, the only neck profiles I really dislike are the extremely thin/wide necks (such as the Ibanez types). It's purely a personal preference thing. My Strat has a much thinner neck than the Paul but it is nice none the less. When you pick out a Paul you might want to pay attention to the weight if you plan to play standing for extended periods of time. I was lucky and mine weighs in at 8Lbs. 1 ounce but some can exceed 10Lbs. Good luck on the hunt. Lots of fun trying to decide what to get.

My friend just bought an Amazing 1960 VOS Les Paul today. We compared it to the 1958 neck, and the 60's neck felt much better.

I am strato's friend that bought the 1960 VOS Les Paul. I love the neck. Feels amazing. Because the 1960 neck is a little thinner than that of the '50's, I was afraid it would lose a little sustain...nope. It is all there.
