I know I've been asking a lot of questions ... but when I bought the Route 66 used I was just not quite satisfied with it. I'm rarely satisfied at the outset though ... rarely a honeymoon phase for me. But I consider amps, guitars, pedals and the like ... just tools. I think it's worth pursuing until you are satisfied. Could be it wasn't the amp for me ... but it turned out great.
In the end, this amp needed a hotter bias and I needed to be able to crank it up to get the sounds I wanted. The Brake Lite worked ok but just did not shave off enough volume to make it work for me. Having had a good experience with my tweed amp, I'm glad I made this very similar VVR mod.
I like it ... you guys helped me get there ... even though I was sort of pest. But right now it's doing great ... feels really good.
Anyway ... I'm "all in" on this amp now ... it's working for me. All the help is very much appreciated. Apologize for the anal retentive questions, posts, etc. You guys helped me get where I needed to be! Thanks again!

- In front ... Tuner, RC, Timmy, BB and Delay/Reverb
- EF86 (Dario Miniwatt) nice tube and I have a nice NOS GE backup
- 12AX7LPS works nicely
- KT66 - discovered guide pin is broken on one tube so I ordered a set of Golden Lions (be here Tuesday) - I'll keep these KT66 as backups
- Still running the 5AR4 but will continue to experiment with the 5U4G with the VVR since I can now bias the amp myself. But I'm satisfied with the 5AR4.
- Brake Lite is disconnected but still mounted in the cab with jacks on both ends. It works pretty well as attenuators go but I like the VVR better.
- 2x12 G1265/M75 Celestion/Scumback is back to the 4-8-16 selectable set up I had to begin with ... extremely flexible with the 4-8-16 option on both the head and the cab.
