Sometimes I think I may be the least informed person on this forum...so once again I turn to my Z bros for assistance. The dilemma: I have a 72' Telecaster RI that I have been revamping. I re-did the neck (stripped it and blasted it with nitrocellulose laquer, new tuners, aged stuff...yada yada.) and I am now ready to redo the body. The problem is that the thing seems to have about 7" of polyurethane on it. I would like to get all of the poly off so that I could do nitrocellulose....but, I would like to get all of the poly off without doing real harm to the arctic white finish. Any ideas?.........p.s. be detailed...i'm dumb. haha! thanks a million, paul

I don't think you can save the finish. It might be messy but I have heard of people using a buffing wheel to take those finishes off. I have no idea what compound would be used.

Thanks....I was worried about that...everything that I've run into has given me the impression that it would eat through everything...paint and all. I may end up doing some experimenting...we'll see how it goes.

those polyester based thick stuff is pretty hard to get off but it can be done. one way is to use a heat gun and it should come off in big chunks when scraped with a sturdy scraper. another to use a belt sander and sand the poop out of it. if you use a heat gun, try not to burn the wood so much and for the sander method, keep an eye on how much you are sanding off. there is also a super toxic paint remover that's supposed to work but i can't remember what it is at the moment. i kind of remember that it's something you get at a boating store. most paint stripper doesn't work on the polyester (or whatever the 2 pack thingy they use) finish.
unless you are in love with that body, i'd just get another one and put on a nitro finish and call it a day. if you want it to be a different color, sand the surface and spray your new color right on it.
