I was just asked today by a real good friend of mine if I would play some acoustic shows with him.
I've got an acoustic that I pick around on at home, but I've never played it out as it is not electric.
My question is Can anyone here recommend a decent pickup for this, or should I just mic it? If you recommend a mic what kind would you use on a budget?
Thanks for the help, Trav

A freind of mine always gets B-Band pickups/mics put in his acoustics and they sound great!

I love my LR Baggs M1, and you don't have to modify your guitar.

I put an undersaddle LR Baggs in mine after going through two undersaddle Fishmans. The Fishmans were too thin and weak sounding and crapped out over a short period of time, so I did some research and ended up with the LR Baggs. The LR Baggs is perfect--nice big, full sound. It pretty much just amplifies the overall tonal quality of my guitar. The slot had to be re-routed as the Baggs is a little wider than the factory Fishmans. Since I have no onboard eq/vol controls, I run it through a Tech21 Acoustic DI (highly recommend). I've had that pickup in my guitar for close to 10 years and have never had a bit of a problem with it and have never even considered putting something else in it.
I hadn't played mine out in a good while (usually playing elec lead) but did so last Sunday and afterwards I was questioned about how I got such a great sound. I wasn't pleased with what was coming through my monitor, but everyone said it sounded great. BTW, for grins I also ran it through my delay for just a little extra depth and then through my mic'd Maz18 for the first time. So there were a lot of variables there. But, it sounds quite right just going direct to the board, which is how I've typically run it in the past. I'd say you can't go wrong with the LR Baggs, but then again different pickups may work better in different guitars. But Baggs does make a quality product.

Does anyone mic there acoustics live anymore? I'm leaning towards getting a Baggs M1 - great reviews.
I think a pickup would work better in a live situation. For recording though, I would opt for a mic's instead. JMO

Baggs makes quality stuff. I use an old Dual Source in my Larrivee and it sounds sweet. I usually use a mic for recording but sometimes I'll use both for solos etc..

+1 on L.R. Baggs. I'd recommend their Para-acoustic DI as well, since it matches so well to their pickup systems.
If feedback isn't a problem, then a mic still sounds best, though. The old standby imo is a Shure SM81 condenser-- but I'd look at other options as well. An SM81 is tough to beat though-- always seems to sound great for acoustic. A decent preamp only makes it better.

Thanks guys for the info. I'm looking into the LR Baggs products. If we get playing some, I'll probably add one of them to it.

If it's not a permanent gig I think I'd just use a soundhole pickup.

Baggs Active I-Beam, or K&K Pure Western. With the K&K I use the Baggs Para 1 preamp.
Very good results from each set up.

A soundhole pickup is the economical alternative. Sounds fine, pop it in, pop it out, put it in another guitar if you like. I use acoustic/electrics for the ease and convenience but I know they're not as good as a mic. Use your own ears. I think piezo systems sound very clicky-clacky*.
*Excuse the tech-speak.

If you want an excellent acousitc pickup to keep for life, try the Sunrise. They're pricey and in limited production but used by many well known acoustic players. www.sunrisepickups.com/index.html

My Larrivee 09 has the LR Baggs I-mix notch system. Great sound and fun to play with.

I agree with Oldster's comment a couple posts back. I've listened to my buddies Taylor 810 piezo pickup and I'm not big on it. I think I'd like it with a soundhole pickup a little bit better. really kind of Sharp (for lack of a better word) with the sound.
