Just bought a used Eric Johnson Strat off the bay from a trusted seller, yes I'm stoked especially if the delivery truck comes while the wife is at work ;D. Otherwise I will be scrambling to sell something so it doesn't look like I collecting more gear. If I bond with the EJ I may put my '03 American Strat Deluxe up for sale but we'll have to wait and see. I have decided I prefer the vintage hardware look plus everything I've read about the EJ is good. I'm just not sure it will growl enough for SRV style Texas Blues, anyone know the answer to that?

I love mine and it can rock - but I would not consider it a growler. Also - I sold my strat deluxe to get the EJ and am glad I did.

Hey guitarstan, great choice! I picked one up last May (sunburst) and it is the best Strat I own. Word of warning though, you will not be able to put it down for awhile. I really think it does more than the rock thing though (although that is what I primarily use it for). It is more versatile than you think. The pickups are awesome, and the neck is terrific. Bridge pickup is very hot, so it can be a little noisier than most, but it absolutely screams. My other two strats are a Malmsteen Signature Strat, and a Lone Star Strat. They are both great for different reasons, but the EJ is definitely my favorite. Congrats, you are gonna love it! ;D

I love mine too. They are nice and light compared to most Strats. The bridge pickup is for sure a bit hotter. Mine measure 5.78 neck, 6.16 middle, and 6.55 bridge. Not as hot as some, but they do sound good. It's one the first Strats I have had where I didn't want to change out the pickups.

Very encouraging responses ... I was hesitant for a while because I've never played one and usually do not buy a guitar without hands-on first. I'll buy a Z amp sight unseen/unheard but not usually a guitar. I just checked FedEx and she's onboard for delivery today ;D. I was on another forum yesterday and made the mistake of reading a thread about PRS Modern Eagles. Apparently they are the stuff dream guitars are made of. I am going to try and put it out of my mind for a while, they cost $4K and up. Geez that seems like a lot of money for a guitar .

Dude, there is always going to be gear out there you wish you had. I went through a horrible spell of GAS untill I realized that I was not really getting the most out of the gear I already own. The EJ Strat is an awesome guitar, and you made a fantastic choice. The day I bought mine, I had a 2k spending cap. I tried out the EJ strat, along with two custom shop strats. I could have bought any of the 3 I tried, including the EJ, and thats the one I walked away with. It felt the best, sounded the best, and had more "vibe" than the others. Believe me, I wanted to like the CS guitars more, but objectively I just couldnt. Also realize that forums are a breeding ground for fanaticism. I have a JCM 800, and on the Marshall forum, you would think that I own one of the holy grails of rock amps. when I try to talk about my Z, nobody seems to care. You gotta take that into consideration too. Sorry for the long post, but you should enjoy your new guitar without worrying that you could have had something else. If it ends up not being for you (unlikely) then you can always sell it. But I think you will have great time with it. Gotta go, time to play my EJ!

Hey Mattman, I see we have similar tastes in guitars...a long time ago I had an ES 355 and it was awesome. But alas I had to sell it to return to college so I could have a real job ;D some day. Now I'm retired and have to be careful how I spend my money. Right now I'm all tapped out so the ME will have to wait. You are right about fanatics, I have a bad case of OCD and I'm not talkin about Fultone ;D.
Time to get back to actually using the gear, practice practice practice.

Just a quick follow up on the EJ. Yes! This guitar is everything I hoped for and maybe a little more. Best $1,200 I ever spent. It not only plays great but it sounds dayum good too. Thanks for all the words of encouragement Z Brothers . I must say I like the tone better than the Fralin Vintage Hots and that was a bit of a surprise! I have to wonder how much better the Fralins would sound in a better grade guitar than the Deluxe?

Question for you. When you put your Fralins in your Deluxe Strat, did you replace the pots as well? American Deluxe Strats usually have 1meg pots installed in them for the stock Noiseless pickups. Fralins and virtually all vintage style Strat pickups need to use 250K pots. 1meg pots on Fralins would make them VERY bright. 250K pots are what they need.

Yes, I would change out the pots with Fralins. I think Fender uses those as a tone "crutch" for over wound dark pickups.

I've heard the EJ Strat is the best Strat Fender ever made. I tried one and really liked it.
