I got a line on a USA made G&L S500 quilt top in Clear Amber with a tinted gloss neck. The guy wants to trade me straight up for my 76 335 Gibby. I'm really not sure what these G&L's sell for new or used but he's asking around $900 cnd for it.
Any thoughts?
Thanks

Yeah that's pretty much it in a nut shell, there are some minor differences (tinted gloss neck, regular strat style knobs, etc...).

There is no bigger G&L fan on this board than me but I'd think twice only from an econmic standpoint..That Gibson could be worth alot more than the G&L over time unless some hero picks up an s-500 and makes guitar history with one . 70's strat s are getting big money now. Can Gibson's be far behind? I would do it if you had to have the G&L...Something I would completely understand. They are great guitars but not "collectables" yet. They merely just play and sound great...The way vintage guitars are going who knows...

I agree with Frank4001. Your 76 335 is probably worth a lot more than $900. G&Ls are great guitars but don't hold their value as much as Fenders or Gibsons.

Thanks Guys, That's what I thought too, I guess I just needed some help getting over the G&L GAS. The 335 is staying with me for a while, at least until I can get decent return for my investment on it. That G&L sure is pretty though, but I'm not 100% sold on the ceramic PU's they use on them babies, lots of output but not nearly as warm sounding as my Strats (I know that's an easy fix). I think that's a good call, those Gibbies can be a good investment over time. If your hell bent on fueling more Strat gas, perhaps you can loan your favorite one to someone you trust for a year. When you finally get it back, it'll be just like Christmas.
Oh, btw i have room on my guitar rack for one more. I'd be glad to help you out on this. ;D ;D

It took a little bit but once I figured out the ceramic pickups on my ASAT's it was almost a revelation...Don't know how much time you spent with the guitar and I've never used the MFD's in a Legacy but they work great for me...I'm starting to think necks and their construction are the biggest factor in a guitar's tone. Not that pickups don't matter. Some are better matches to a particular guitar but I think the responce of the instrument is on the neck more than anything. Got to work those tone and volume controls on G&l's. I think you need both....yep, absolutely...it is essential...now go buy it. $800.00 does sound very reasonable for a that guitar..especially since you can hold it in your hand and not do the e-bay shuffle. Good luck.

If you're chomping at the bit for an S-500 I still have one available - natural ash. Love it - was my main guitar w/Johnny Lee - but need some funds.
There's a thread in the for sale section - it's down a bit since I haven't updated it in a while.
