Ok, so such a suggestion is pure blasphemy in the church of the Z, but I am wondering if there is a way to calm the gain down a bit on this thing, apart from rolling back the volume on the guitar. It is a great sound but I am mostly a blues player and it feels a bit over the top at the moment. Can a tube or two be swapped to reduce the gain structure?
Anyone else using this for blues and have thoughts on the gain?

Try the Z AIR BRAKE. Go to the Z web site & read about the AirBrake. It comes in handy in small clubs.

How are you guys equalizing the two channels with the brake? When I attenuate mine to where the gain side is cookin, the clean side needs to be cranked up to the point where it's all grit. all this said I'm only knocking it down a bit -not squishing the heck out of it. sample settings?

I think I asked the question the wrong way. I actually have an airbrake and it works great. I guess by taming I meant toning down the amount of grind and/or making it break up a little later or require it to be pushed more before it breaks up. So I was thinking using a less agressive tube in the pre, perhaps a 12AT7 in place of one of the 12AX7s, but I have not idea which tube to try this with. I think I might be looking for a tad bit more of an american sounding overdrive. Does this make sense?

I'd try a 5751.
