I've read a few reviews on the Maz38 forum about which speakers seem to take the cake on best fit for the Maz38 Sr.
I'm currently running mine through a Dr. Z 1X12 with V30. I recently purchased a WGS Invader 50W, but have not installed it yet. Either the V30 was pretty new when I bought it from a TGP'r or the head is just too much wattage for it, but the speaker doesn't break up quite like I want. Lately, the V30 has seemed to mellow out and loosen up. I've owned the cab for a little over a year now. I use a Jetter Jetdrive for dirt and an RC for boost. I love the platform this amp provides for pedals, however would love to dial more of the amp's natural drive in, without the speaker getting too fizzy and flubby. Any other users know the fullness this amp gives and I want to maximize on that. Looking for a speaker that will remain smooth in the break up.
Any thoughts on this? Should I keep my patience with the V30 and let it break in, or go with the G12H or The Tonker? I plan to get the WGS Invader installed soon, just have been extremely busy with not enough time to install and test yet.
Cheers,
MH

The V30 is a very efficient speaker @ 100db, plus it's a 60 watt speaker. It would take quite a bit to get any speaker distortion. The G12H30 or either of the Heritage G12's would break up a bit better. If you want more vintage tone the alnico Gold would be a nice touch.

Even though I also own a Z 2x10 cab, which I do like, I nearly always take out my 1x12 with V30 to go with my Maz 38 head. It must be well broken in by now, and I'm used to it. I have a Gold which I'll put in that cab when I get around to it just to see what it's like, but, contrary to the popular view, I seem to prefer the V30.

Right now I'm REALLY liking a Guytron 2X12 with Vintage 30s. But I also have a THD 2X12 with a pair of Golds that are taking their time to break in.

I use a 63 tele with seymour Pro II bridge pickup. I play country and classic rock. I bought an anniversary Maz38 with 2120's. The best settings are Volume on 11o'clock, Treble,Bass, and Mids all at 12o'clock, Master at 1o'clock cut at 9o'clock, and reverb at 9o'clock. I wanted it really clean and let my pedals do the cool stuff so i replaced the v1 and v2 with a matched pair of 5751's and replaced the phase inverter with a 12at7. I loose some of the power output with the 5751 but they dont breakup too fast and I like the clean sound. A little clena boost at the end of the chain is great for getting the volume back. If the DR ever puts a 1x15 uin a Maz cabinet, Ill have one fast!

I replaced the stock Z speakers with a couple of Reinhardt labeled Weber Blue Pups ceramics. these speakers took the amp to another level IMO. Love the tones and pedal friendlyness.

I'm suprised to hear no one talking about the Celestion Gold in this thread. The guys over in the Maz JR area seem to love that speaker. Is there something that would make that speaker much different in the senior?

I'm using a gold. It's nice and chimey and not ice picky or harsh. I generally favor alnicos over ceramics though. Depends on the application I suppose.

I use a 2x12 with a Blue / Gold (alnico) in an open back. If I could only use one speaker, then it'd be the Gold by itself. I've tried a LOT of speakers along the way too.

Also a little surprised nobody's mentioned the 12" Tone Tubby Red Alnico in this thread, either. I love mine with my MAZ Jr. and--since it'll handle up to 50 W--I'd assume it would also sound nice with the MAZ Sr. I know that as far as 12" Alnico's the Gold is always gonna get more love, but the TT deserves a look, too.

Ok so I've tried 3 different speakers so far with my Maz Sr. : G12H30 Tonker Gold
... Gold wins for me.

I've tried several different speakers with my MAZ 38....the original factory speaker was a G12H30, have also tried an Eminence Wizard, a WGS alnico G12, an Eminence Red,White, and Blues, and Doc's 10's. I like loud and clean, and a balanced tone spectrum, so the R,W,and B is my current favorite with the Maz. Which is the opposite of what a lot of guys here like...earlier breakup/less efficiency. The WGS gives you the alnico chime, and nice tone, but it's a 75W speaker, so no cone breakup, really. WGS makes some good stuff without the huge price-tag though...you should try that Invader and let us know what you think.

I still like the fast response and tight bass of the V30, but I recently installed my Gold in my 1x12 cab, and after some gigs and general playing around it's still there, and growing on me. I may eventually still go back to a ceramic unit, (Tayden in the UK make a 50 watt version of the G12H30 which interests me), but I have to admit the more I play the Gold the more I like it.

Anyone try a MAZ 38 with 2 blues? Do you lose too much of the low end to make it worth while?

I have had great luck with a new Jensen C12K speaker in my MAZ 38. I am really digging the way it sounds with the MAZ.

You know, I believe that benttop(Steve) had a Weber AlNiCo California in his MAZ at some point... can't remember if it was a Jr. or Sr., though. I have always suspected that a Cali. (or actually a more true JBL-type speaker like the NeoMag) would be really nice in the MAZ 38 Sr. Perhaps if Steve comes across this, he could comment..?

Alright fellas, I'm back with some thoughts on the WGS Invader. It has a good and tight response. Not as what I would call "brittle" as the V30 comes off sometimes. If I remember correctly, the guy I got the amp from had the high cut mod done on this. However, my gripe with the WGS is I'm still not impressed with it's response when I drive the head. It's not smooth, pretty choppy. I know this thing can do great things. I do need to replace tubes in it...currently running GT's that came with it - it's on my to do list, just getting the funds together to purchase the tube kit from Doc. Any thoughts on tubes being an issue with the break up?

Speakers do make a difference but worn out tubes can sound like crap. I would make sure you have good tubes before you judge any more speakers. I like the gold. It's a nice speaker, but I'm going to put a plug in here for Weber. I really like the Weber Silver Bell 50 watt with light dope. Also, the Webers are less efficient than the gold so it will allow you to push the amp a little more. Everyone needs to try a silver bell at least once.
