Does anyone play a Lentz SSL - how does it sound? I'd be interested to hear of any views and experiences of the SSL.
I'm thinking of upgrading the strat department of the guitar collection and I am after the chimy vintage sound with tons of natural sustain. I already have an HSL and love the neck, the P90 tone and the huge sustain, and wondered how well the SSL covered the vintage chime thing or whether it had its own sound.

I have a Lentz SSL w/maple neck and alder body....it really does it for me with the Z28 - kind of a Kirk Fletcher tone for the blues. Mine was delivered in Nov of 2006. Can't put it down. Sold my CS Fender '59 relic tele to fund it. The pickups are great - though my other strats have been a GL Legacy, Fender Roadhouse Special, and Fender JV Strat with Fralins so they aren't really in the same league. Check out the Sweet Home Chicago video to hear it through a camcorder mic with my Z28 and Fat Boost - www.houndstoothblues.com/video/Or you can listen to some MP3s of it on Let Me Love You Baby (FD2 pedal) and the 2nd Solo on I Just Want a Little Bit (Fat Boost) - www.houndstoothblues.com/music/?id=4Talk to Scott about these newer pickups he is putting in the SSL - they are sweet to my ears. Dave - nitro finish and Fiesta Red is the color. Maybe somewhere down the road I will get a DL-90; but for me this guitar is it and it needs to be played and gigged as often as possible at least for a year or two

Scott just finished a fret job on my HSL, sho' glad to have 'er back. Had a little seperation anxiety happenin'. Plays like melted butter again, and 'tunes up' very nicely. In these days of uber-mass production, it sure is nice that there's an 'individual' that does such good work that'll talk to ya when ya call 'em. (unless they're out to lunch...:^)

Did you need a D & P or a full refret?

What's a D&P?! Sounds like somethin' the gals get at the doctor's office... Naw, just crowned 'em again. And changed the pots out from 1 meg to...either 500K or 250K, not sure, but man, is it ever so much more so better in the middle position. I can really blend 'em now. WAY more usable.

I'm thinking the pot change would be good. For some reason the taper seems different on each of the one meg volume pots. I'll probably send mine back before too long for the same procedures. What method do you ship yours by?

It was FedEx and was there on the 3rd day, I think it was called 'Express Saver' or something... When both pickups are on I sure can tell a difference.

Well, I called Scott on Monday, and we talked SSL's. What a great guy, very laid back and full of information about options. I think I ordered an SSL, Alder body, maple neck, two colour burst. I say I THINK, but it was that laid back ("no deposit from you European guys, transfer fees are too high, I'll get it it production and just pay me sometime...").
Its going to be a long summer - I'm coming over to the West Coast in the fall and plan to collect and hand carry her home.

Did the tone soften at all? I wondered if the 1 meg pots were part of the tone 'characteristic' of the HSL since pot value influences the impedence of the pups, and you can lose treble with low value pots. Meant to ask Scott when I was on the phone.... I'd really like change mine to better taper if it doesnt affect the tone. Was it 500k or 250k ?

Not sure what value they put in, you'd have to ask somebody at the shop. It just seems to make the center position, both pickups on, WAY more versatile for what I need that position for, mostly 'clean' passages where I don't have the volumes up all the way.. In the past, the neck pickup would come on almost full strength as soon as you opened the pot up just a hair, now I can adjust it 'on the fly' and there is a new world of combinations there. The neck pickup by itself seems MUCH more usable and better sounding also. Hope Scott doesn't get too excited, me sharing (airing?) my opinions here...

He might get a bit wound up. Scott's a great guy and has a lot of well earned confidence in his instruments but he can't control the taper so he should understand. I actually think it gives kudos to a builder who will do what the owner needs and not make a fuss. Lately I put fresh strings on my Tom Anderson and was playing it a bit. While it's great guitar I easily prefer my Lentz! I'm thinking about ordering another if he'll change a few things for me.

I wanted to change a few things on the SSL order but got talked out of all of them somehow! I wanted a hardtail (I dont do wang bars) but he said just lock down the block with 5 springs - when you come to sell it you'll regret having a hard tail" SELL it? Excuse me???!! The same pattern followed with discussions on inlay markers, master tone controls etc!! We didnt talk tapers though. Not complaining. He knows what he's talking about.

He very much knows what he's talking about. One of the big changes I would want would be a different fingerboard radius. 9.5" is okay but just not my thing. I need something flatter. If for some reason he won't do that then the deal won't go down. I imagine he will, if I ask nice.
