I pulled out my Ray this past week and have put it through it's paces at a couple of gigs. The first few times I played the Ray a few months ago, I didn't like the sound of the amp... I didn't like the sound of the blues much. Starting to find out, I just wasn't used to hearing the tone of the speakers. They are now starting to grow on me a little bit. I still think I might try some different speakers in this thing, but I am going to run these awhile and try to work my pedalboard into shape with this amp specifically and see how she does. I may have to put the Maz 18 up for a while.

I really like how different speakers give the RAY different, but just as beautiful tone. Tones? Haven't tried the Blues, but 2x10 Golds are a hoot. tom

Hey Brian. I was the same way. When i got my Ray it had 2 Blues and I just couldnt bond with it. It was way too flabby but strat/ tele tones wwere great. But the humbucker guitars wouldnt stack up. Try a GH30 with the blue. Its a great combination . I switched to a Gold / GH30 because of usimg the same cab with my other Z' s. Give it some time you will soon find the Ray Rules with the right speakers. I wish they would so a demo with the Ray and different speakers it may sell way more just MOO:)))

The Ray is a thing of beauty. There are a few of us, we're in the minority, that prefer speakers other than the blues, which are a thing of beauty. My favorite pairing for country/rock/blues is a weber alnico 50w blue dog. It's an inefficient speaker so you turn up the ray a bit more. Because it's a darker speaker the tone and cut controls will need to be set differently. And for Rock -n- Roll a G12-65 is mighty sweet. There are plenty of other cool combinations. A Z Best cab with the G12H and V30 sounds great too, loud but great.

I'm in the same minority as Drew although I rarely turn the Ray up past 10:00 so our usage is different. John also makes a VERY good point. My Blue and Gold both had the most change of any speakers I've owned after a long breakin period. Don't judge them too soon if they were new when you got them.

I actually bought the amp used...I can see why people love this amp...but after playing the Maz with g12-h30 and a v30...the Ray with blues is a completely different animal. Not bad, just different.

The Blues have such a unique sound, they do take some getting used to. I've never liked them TBH but I do in my Ray. I still prefer ceramics for rock though...the Ray is a completely different animal running through my other cab with V30's and greens.

Howdy,
Had I a good $2,000 or more lying around, the Stangray or maybe the burly-toned Route 66 would be my choice. I'll bet I'd really enjoy the chimey tones of a 'Ray. Enjoy!

I saw a stingray over on TGP yesterday if you found that $$ in the couch cushions.
