Got a question for all you Strat experts. I recently got an American Deluxe Strat with the SCN pickups and am loving the tones - except for the bridge pickup. I know they are notoriously bright, but mine also seems to have some subtle intonation thing going on when I switch to that position (although the guitar is intonated correctly and sounds great with all other pickup positions). I tried lowering the bridge pickup height and that took away a lot of the brightness, but there is still some "warbling" intonation effect going on. I'm not really interested in replacing the pickup with a humbucker, but was wondering if there are other suggestions of things I could try?

Is it with the S1 switch up or down? Up, mine sounds like a typical strat. Down, it combines a couple of the pickups with a capacitor and is rather dark sounding to me, but is the closest sound to a full size humbucker that it makes.
It's a wonderful guitar, and the pickups are Ok, but I'm going to replace them in the near future.

Yeah I leave the S1 switch in the up position all the time and love that classic Strat tone. I agree the down position does have some interesting humbucker qualities, but seems to lose too much definition.
This is the nicest guitar in my stable, and brand new, so I'm just a little hesitant about ripping out pickups so soon. Thanks for the reply!

Hey Tex-Try adjusting the bass side of the pickup down 'til you lose the 'warble'. This happens to me a lot on strats, some guys have a set measurement or distance that they say is 'textbook' but big deal if it doesn't 'sound' good! Just my opinion, a strat ain't a strat w/ a 'bucker in it! Might sound good, maybe even real good, but it wouldn't be the same. Is your back tone control wired to the treble pickup? You only have to change 1 wire, and it sure makes a difference for me in getting rid of a little o' that treble that puts yer teeth on edge. Let me know how ya come out...

Hey Tex, like the answer you got from BW - why not just wire in the tone to the bridge p/u if ain't already connected. This should open up some good tones as well control some that might not be so pretty 'course, a bit of extra wiring work like what G&L does for a separate Bass and Treble tone controls might an interesting idea too ('course I'm biased 'cause I've got one and think it's the shiz) ;D

I tried lowering the bass side of the bridge pickup and that did help a little (Thanks Bud!) Taking her to a luthier today to set up for heavier strings. Seems the Fender factory is setting up for 9's on most of the current Strat models. I'm used to playing light strings, but these magnets may be too strong for 9's and 'warping' the tone a little. Or maybe I'm warped, who knows. But I'll see if 10-46's help. Thanks guys!
