So I've gigged the Z28 2x10 combo twice now, and it was too loud to crank at both places. Should I get a brake lite, or just turn it down and use my old Fulldrive2 for dirt? Does the Brakelite drop the volume enough? And without changing the tone much? And by "enough" I mean to about the lowest volume you can play with a drummer/bass player with in a bar that holds 50 people?

I have a 1x10 combo. The Red Fang is known to be a loud speaker. Playing a Les Paul. Last week's gig was in a large sports bar. Amp volume about 10 o'clock, maybe a little higher, Brake Lite on 2. Last Saturday a smaller venue, performing for a benefit, so less volume needed. BL on 3. When that seemed a bit too much attenuation, I moved volume up to 11:30. I'm using guitar knobs and pedals for different flavors of OD, clean, etc.
Not sure this helps, but maybe it gives you some basis for comparison.

Brake Lite will double the utility of your amp.

I just dont have any experience with attenuators. I dont have an issue dropping the $170, I just want to know it will be worth it to me. Because I could always just turn way down and use the FD2, and that's free. But I love love love the tone I get with my G&L Legacy and the Z28 set at 4-1-4. It is just amazing. If the Brakelite will give me that at a volume level that is not too loud for a bar that holds 50 and a drummer playing lightly, I will get it. My FD2 doesn't give me exactly that tone.
So will it?

You will love it. I use my BrakeLite on 2 or 3 clicks sometimes depending on the venue (using a 1x12 cab) and I get a great tone. With my G&L Skyhawk (Strat) I can get just a bit of hair on the sound and use OD pedals to push it over the top. With humbuckers it will sing on it's own just by hitting the string harder. You will find the BrakeLite a very useful tool I'm pretty certain. I also use it with my Maz 18 with great results and looking forward to hooking it up to a Remedy on Thursday when UPS arrives.

Yep--on one or two clicks the BL is very transparent with the Z-28 and hardly adds any compression. On three clicks it darkens the tone slightly and compresses a bit. On four clicks it can get pretty saggy. I think the best advice is try one and see if you like it--I use mine every time we play out.

My Z28 makes out volumewise at @10 o'clock. The rest of the vol knob just adds od. At 2 clicks on the Brakelite, how much does the volume drop(8 or 9 o'clock???)

I just posted accidentally on the Z28 section about Brake Lites. I find the one on my Z28 to be a real tone sucking device set at any level but off. JMHO. See other post.

Question: Does the BL want to see an 8ohm load only? 4 ohm OK?

How are you experiencing the device? Turn on with amp wide open, then use Brake Lite to turn down? You will hate it every time, but it's not the device, it's your ears and your brain.
Try this one time: on a new day, fresh ears, turn the brake lite to 4 clicks, then power up your amp and adjust the controls until you feel you have "your sound." It might take a bit of fiddling, but you will be able to find it.
Then use the Brake Lite to turn UP. Your experience should be quite the opposite of your previous experience.
Try it.

I was able to find a nice spot on 2 clicks for a very low volume gig last week. Essentially I was using no OD, as the BL makes it pretty gritty all by itself. Any answers on the 4 o hm/8ohm question?

Brake Lite and Airbrake are the same in that regard - 4 ohms to 16 ohms, nothing outside that range.
You can see everything I've collected about them by clicking the links in my signature.

cool, nice job on the tables! Thanks. I have some updates to put in for the M12 and the Antidote once it is officially released, but other than that, they are fairly up to date.
