I'm guessing it's a strat, but with factory pick ups? I love the guitar tone, especially on "Josie", "Peg", and "Home At Last", which are all on AJA. Anyone have any idea? The overdrive is amazing too....I'd really like to know how to achieve that sound.

good question .... as for all those AJA tracks ... lots of ace players on that album. I'm guessing a mod'd strat possibly with some 'buckers in front and back .... a touch of compression ..... and some were probably done with 335 courtesy of Larry Carlton .... Jay Graydon credited with the solo on Peg .... wanna get a (solo-ing) sound like that? Z-28 with compression and hint of overdrive/boost ( from a box or just plug straight in and crank it) and maybe a volume pedal adjusted to taste ... try with either a 335 on neck 'bucker, or get a strat with a nice PAF type p/u in neck. course, I could be entirely wrong on all the above, but try it - you might like it ;D and, check out this link as a starting point: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aja_(album)just my .02

If I remember correctly, Jay Graydon used a Dan Armstrong Orange Squeezer into a modified Fender Super Reverb for "Peg". Larry Carlton used his 335 into smallish Fenders like Princetons that were cranked way up. I don't think Larry had his Dumbles then, but I could be wrong.

PDW think you got it right with the Fenders - Princetons will give you a really sweet sound with the 335. As for the Dumbles, I got no idea

On Josey and Peg, I think Lary Carlton did a lot of the guitar work if I'm not mistaken. I may be wrong.
I know WB uses strat style with a Top Hat heads and cabs. To be honest, you could get really close with a Maz 18/38 and a Xotic AC.

Josie was definately Larry with his 335, he does a cool rendition on the clapton festival DVD a couple o years back, and speaks of "you might remember this guitar on a little song years ago that goes like this", he had the dumbles out for this one, obviously, but i think as well that he was a fender guy previous.

Buddy, I think y'all got it right with Kid Charlemagne, but for me it is a toss-up between Home at Last and Only A Fool Would Say That.

Oh man, love Steely Dan. Haven't listened to them in a long, long time. I was always amazed with the soloing on "Bottisatva."

On the video of the making of Aja, there's also a mid 60's Fender Vibrolux 2-10 in play along with Larry and his 335. How and when it was used I'm not sure.
