I'm posting 2 of these threads - one for tele-style and one for strat style.
I'm completely tired of my stock G&Ls howling all the time...like the spank from the ceramic pups, but their microphonic nature has made them useless.
So, again on the pickup search. New builders, new styles. What do you like w/your Z's? FYI, I play everything so 'style of music' doesn't really apply...let's have it.

I put some Rio Grande Muy Grande's in my American Tele. I like them - fuller than stock (which is what I was looking for). I was mostly concerned about the bridge, but the set was pretty cheap so I got the neck too. I was plesantly surprised with the neck tone improvement.

On my Fender Tele I changed out the stock pickups for Kinmans AVN 48s.

In the tele I've got the original pickups (1967) but they've been rewound by lindy over about 5%. The originals were horribly microphonic and had been potted in laquer so you couldn't repot them. :\ They sound great.

Seymour Duncan STL52-1 in the bridge. www.seymourduncan.com/products/telesdescr.shtml#fivetwoapplication: Extremely balanced true single-coil pickup developed for Nashville studio players. Recommended for traditional country, country pop, blues, and classic rock. description: Tele® players often complain that their low strings sound “mushy” and their high strings are too bright - especially in the bridge position. The Five-Two concept corrects this with Alnico 5 magnets on the three low strings and Alnico 2 magnets on the three high strings. The result is an all-around, extremely well-balanced pickup with traditional output and vintage appointments such as vulcanized fibre bobbins, formvar wire, vintage magnet stagger and waxed cloth hookup cable. Rhythm model comes with chrome plated brass cover.

I got a '52 ri Tele and have kept it stock. Have thought about changin' about pickups, but just don't feel right doin' it. I bought it 'cause I like the sounds it makes and don't wanna mess with the 'mojo'.

Cool. Appreciate the input. Going to do something about these howl-a-polooza ceramics after next week. Sad, love their tone, but the pups simply can't handle gain or high SPL situations.

Interesting idea though. Will do a little reading up on it. Those are very nice. I have a brass saddle Callaham, and it really softens and fills out the sound. In combination with the Amalfitanos (which are potted) there is NO squeal even at high gain and really high vols.

Sometimes on a steel bridge plate Tele it's the bridge plate howling not the pickup. Get it to howl and then reach thru the strings and push down on the plate right next to the pickup. If it stops howling then that's at least part of the howl. I had one doing that and I just put several layers of electrical tape on the bottom and screwed it down tight. No more howl.

Good suggestion. Unfortunately, the neck and bridge on both Classics howl and the full set on the S-500 do as well. It's just the pup design. THey're great clean or with a light grit, but just can't handle "loud" or gain. Especially in close proximity to the amp.

Tele - Voodoo te-60 in the bridge and a Fender Fat- 52 for the neck. Strat- Voodoo 60's Both these guitars sound as good as any that I've played - Real Sweet! Call Peter Florance at Voodoo and he'll be very helpful and answer any questions you might have. Real nice guy! voodoopickups.com/index.htm

Voodoo are always right. I've been suggested for Fralin's on Tele but I think that Voodoo could be great too.

My "Tele" came with Danny Gatton Signature models by Joe Barden. I love the bardens' huge sound, but they defintely aren't the traditional Tele tone, so they're probably not for everyone. They don't cluck like real Tele pups do, at least not in this guitar with me operating it:)

Bardens in my Gatton. Seymour Duncans in the Trussart. The pickup selector 'clunk' on changing PU's on the Trussart is the only thing I don't like about it. What are these Fralin Blues like?
