Anyone have experience with the Callaham S Model Pre-wired Pickguard Assembly with Fralin pups for a Strat? I would rather have a new Don Grosh but for $340 maybe I can make my Strat sound like one!? And save the money for another Z amp like the new SRZ ;D.
Thoughts, ideas, suggestions? Thanks!

Forget that silly prewired pickguard...what did you get for the Deluxe?? What do you have against the prewired version? Seems like an easy way to mod a guitar without having to spend a lot of time burning my fingers with a soldering iron .

I think the prewired assembly is a great way to go. What pups can you get on that? If you have your choice, the Blues are great pups (I have them in two Groshes here and they are outstanding pups). Also, Fralin has a baseplate they offer on their strat bridge pups that I hear a lot of guys love - I've never heard it but my understanding is that it makes an attempt to do for the strat bridge pup what the metal ashtray does for the Tele. I've been wanting to try that for a long time, but I haven't had a guitar to do it with until just lately. Anyway, getting a prewired is a great way to go in my view. You can do a bit better wiring it up yourself, but if you don't have soldering skills, you can also make a huge mess of it.

Stan I bought one of those for an '82 RI '57 Strat I had, GREAT sounding pups and well worth it IMO. I do not know that you can choose the Fralin model as Callaham has their Fralins, Reported to be 3% underwound, Mine were awesome, great clean and handled even heavy distortion without a problem, Go for it !

Curt I believe you are right Callaham uses their own special wound Fralins. Not so sure I like that part of the deal but the convenience factor is enticing.

I have the the Strat assembly with his special Fralins they sound great. He also offers Vintage Hot and Real 54's. He cryogenically treats the pickups, switch and pots. He claims it makes a sound difference. If it's good enough for Walt Disney and Ted Williams' severed head it's good enough for me.

I used the tele prewired kit in a partscaster, and it was excellent.

Just to clarify what jimfla pointed out -- you do get a choice of pups, I believe the baseplate is standard, as is a .1 mfd Orange Drop capacitor, and you have the option of doing the Fralin blender pot wiring, too. I went this route with my from-parts Strat-style knockoff, currently awaiting assembly, due later this week...

:What do you have against the prewired version? Seems like an easy way to mod a guitar without having to spend a lot of time burning my fingers with a soldering iron " I have absolutely nothing against it, in fact I wish I'd had some of those to work with years ago. Would have saved me time, and the Fralins are great PU's to boot!. I'm just saying and thinking that in light of that great little '56 Deluxe you had up for sale, this pre-wired pickguard just didn't get me as excited.

I spoke at length with a well informed fella this week about Fralins in Strats, he suggested in a good solid even sounding guitar; Vintage hots in neck and mid with a steel pole in the bridge for a ballsier P-90/Broadcaster type bridge tone...that what I am after out of a Strat.
If the Guitar lacks mid range he sugested Blues specials.

Just stumbled onto Rothstein Guitars web site looking at their Pre-Wired Custom Strat Assembly (S-S-S). These guys look top shelf you can pick from standard $2 caps to $20 upgraded caps, 2 mil copper shield, Fralin pups, push-pull tone pots to add different pup combinations. Not cheap but looks like a good way to upgrade an American Deluxe Strat to a Custom Shop grade or better; perhaps even GROSH quality at least the electronics. www.guitar-mod.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=SFNTAny thoughts?

The steel pole may be right up my alley for my Zion. I can tell the middle and neck pickups are blues becaues they sound much thicker than the bridge which sounds more plinky (more than what you'd expect).
