Has anyone tried, or does anyone own on of these Suhr Strat style guitars?
I'm just wondering what you think of them?
I was in a music store the other day trying out pedals and the sales guy asks me what kind of git box I wanted, he handed me this Suhr Strat when I said a Strat. It played pretty good and sounded like a Strat, but it didn't blow my skirt up or anything. That was the first time I have ever laid hands on one, never heard of them before. I don't even know how much they wanted for it, I didn't ask, since I found it rather run of the mill for my liking.
Any thoughts? Just curious.

I've been wondering the same thing. Grosh and Tom Anderson's certainly get a fair amount of recogintion on this forum but haven't heard a word about Suhr's.

J,
As you already know from my reply to your thread about your Les Paul, I bought a Grosh Bent Top Custom this past weekend.
That was after trying out at the same dealer two Anderson Cobra S, a Melancon, a Suhr Carve Top Standard (Strat style) and a PRS soapbar for good measure.
Personal preference is really what it's all about! Like you though, I just wasn't blown over by any of them, including the Suhr. There was just something "different" enough about the Grosh. The neck felt great in my hands right away!
I realize I didn't try every model that these builders can produce. My main beef was the standard neck sizes and profiles/back shapes. I can play thin necks, but these were just a bit too thin for my taste.
I'm not in any way putting down the others, and would like to try some again with oversize necks. The build quality is top notch when your looking at guitars in this category, so like I said, it comes down to what feels right in your hands.

Isn't Suhr sort of the new kid on the block ? I'd only heard about them recently and there are no dealers in my area .

Hey Nighthawk That's what I thought too but after surfing his web site the guys been around for a while, he even headed up the Fender Custom Shop for a bite. He has been building for a couple of decades at least, but I'm not sure when his name started appearing alone on the headstock. There are no examples of his work, and no dealers, in my part of Canada either, but I did run into a dealer carrying his stuff in Ottawa last time I was up there on business. We always seem to be the last guys to get new products, most of the local stores only carry the big name brands cause that's what they can sell. [glow=limegreen,2,300]-J-[/glow]

The only dealer I know of is Lauzon Music in Ottawa which you are close to Zdogma . Brace yourself.....not cheap and Dave in there was not offering much in a discount ! This seems to be something else we suffer from up here too besides lack of dealers is a fairly large price hike compared to our brothers in the US of A . I know it's the same for the fellows in the UK and elswhere too . : (

That's were I tried the Suhr I played in Lauzons. They are the only Z dealers I have ever been into, it's where I played my first Jr and Sr through a 2X12 Zbest, and got my first case of the Z Gas Syndrome or ZGS. Great gear but not much for wheeling and Dealing on anything. Come tho think of it I bought the Groove Tubes to re-tube my Jr head from them last time I was in. [glow=limegreen,2,300]-J-[/glow]

I was building a cab for a friend, and I went down to get a speaker (at Tony's), and when I asked the guy about guitar speakers, he said they don't sell them, and they couldn't even order one....

Since you were here last,
MusicStop out of Halifax has been expanding like crazy, they opened brand new stores in Saint John, Fredericton and Moncton in New Brunswick. These are big new stores with lots of stuff, they seem to be slowly getting into the "interesting" lines like Fulltone, Diamond, etc... and occasionally get in interesting one of's for custom guitars and such (not very often). As a typical box type store they are more concerned with the products everybody knows and loves for sure, they are always an easier sell. They can custom order lots of stuff they don't regularly carry but it can be a 6 month wait sometimes. But this is definitely a step in the right direction for all NB players, a welcome change from the norm.

I bought a Suhr Carve Top several years ago and its my main guitar. Both him and Tom Anderson build great strat and tele type guitars. Suhr's have a little more of vintage feel and sound to them. The paint and finish work is outstanding. Knopfler thought his fret work was great, and now they Plek all their guitars to make the fret work even better. When he builds a guitar for you, he will install whatever pickups you choose. Can't say enough good things about them, they are great guitars.

Well slap my head...I finally get it now, Mr. Benttop, after all these years. You're such a man of mystery! ;D Glad you picked yours up again and got reacquainted. Yes, mine is the most resonant electric I've ever owned. I get a kick out of sitting down with it unplugged. Oh, and the Gotoh 1055 trem is super, IMO. I don't know if it's mostly just setup, the trem itself or both. But, I'd like to put one of these on my other guitars that have trems. The other guitars I tried out weren't slackers by any stretch, but besides the build quality, it was the neck/frets that sold me on this one. I did trade one of my Pauls in for this one. I don't miss it yet. But, I have the other one that I bought new in '75. Too attached to let it go. Hey can I change my online name to "benttop II?" I think it has a nice ring to it, dont'cha agree? I agree it is a huge step. When I first moved to the big city, in the pre-internet era I couldn't believe how badly I had been gouged in the past on music gear.

In my opinion the Suhrs are every bit as good as the other high end guitars. I've played several at my local store (Alpha Music), mostly strat and tele types, and they're wonderful guitars. I own an Anderson, but will own a Suhr at some point in the future. Probably one of the best playing, and sounding Tele's I've ever played. As a matter of fact, that's what I was playing when I fell in love with the Stingray! Harold

I've been interested in all of these builders too. So last summer when I was in Boston on business, I spent some time at Boston Guitar and played several Groshes, Suhrs and Vinettos. For me, the Suhrs made me feel at home right away, very much like my 63 Strat--well broken in feel and all that. But the Grosh Retro Classic I played was just startlingly better to my hands and ears--it's now right at the top of my GAS list for S-style guitars.
BTW, I'm in Vancouver and nobody seems to have any of these brands over here either. I just buy in the States and pay extra at the border.

I think the Suhrs look great! Never seen a bad Grosh either except his take on the Tele body is not quite my thing. One thing about the Lentz guitars is he designs the pickups himself to complement the woods.

Suhr is not 'new' by any stretch, Ed King of Skynyrd was playing what was then known as "Pensa-Suhr" guitars when Skynyrd came back in '87 for 10 year anniversary of "the crash".
Seems to me Don Grosh has the vintage feel neck thing down the best, and that's my thing, my Andy was almost self playing but lacked soul to me, it just never spoke to me.

The Pensa guitars are famous because Mark Knopfler played them for a while (probably still owns them).

I play a Suhr Pro Strat - It looks, plays & sounds great, very versatile, xlnt workmanship. The necks are especially nice. They are made in So Cal. Check out their website for details/dealers. They usually sell for a little under the retail price. www.suhrguitars.com

John Suhr is a very influential man in the guitar world. When he was at the Fender Custom Shop, he was THE guy to get on a MasterBuilt. His influence is almost as intense as Tom Anderson as far as technology goes. He has his hands in the amp pot too. He helped design the CAA stuff and has a new Suhr amp that's pretty cool. Now, he and J Black have teamed up to do the Antique Guitars for Suhr. Suhr builds them and J finishes them and relic's them in nitro. Should be great stuff.

I used to have Jay work on my guitars when he lived here in KC. Jim Colclasure had a little storefront in an apartment building down on Linwood. Jay had an apartment in the same building and had his shop in the basement. After that everyone knows his history at Fender etc.. I believe he still does a lot of work for the Rolling Stones but I doubt he's built any more guitars for Prince lately. I've seen some relic refinished Fenders he's done and if someone didn't tell you they were reliced you'd swear they were real. On the vintage market a Jay black refin will bring more than most anybody elses refin. I'll second that "Should be great stuff".

I haven't Gas'd for a new guitar for a quite some time ... the Grosh's just do it for me ;D Of course there aren't as many Grosh models as there are Z amps - I guess that's why i still need more Zs ;D ;D
