I'm wondering if my CG 1x12 combo's Vintage 30 speaker has the power handling ability to deal with a higher wattage Z head, say a Maz 38 Sr. or Galaxie head? I think I remember seeing somewhere that the V30 was the standard speaker in all Z 1x12 combos, in which case the answer would be yes-but I can't find where I read that. I'm just thinking about sitting another head on top of my CG combo, and I like the sound of the V30 but can't seem to find power handling specs on it.
Secondly, isn't the V30 a fairly efficient speaker, and if so, would that have the effect of increasing the amp's headroom as compared to a different less efficient speaker?

I'm no expert but the Celestion V30 is rated to handle 60+ watts so it should be able to handle the power of the 38 watt Maz or the 30/40w Galaxie head without a problem. Dr. Z's heads will often hit higher peak wattage but you should still be o.k. with those heads at least, perhaps not the Delta or SRZ-65 if you like to crank it. According to the Celestion website the V30 is rated at 100db (efficiency). I'm not sure how headroom is related to efficiency, so someone else will perhaps chime in.

v30's are rated at 60 watts (the "30" is misleading) so it should be able to handle any other Z head except maybe the Delta 88. V30 is more efficient than a greenback or G12h30 but a little less efficient than a blue or gold alnico. Headroom will depend on amp and speaker as some amps break up sooner as do some speakers.

.....just a thought....while i find that the Vintage 30 works well with a Ghia....(my bandmate uses that setup....which i used to own)...i found it to be kinda harsh and inyoface with my Maz 38...i guess i just like the V30 at lower voume....the G12H30...otoh....stays pretty warm when it gets more signal....

You are right on the money and the V30 is a very efficient speaker, meaning at lower volume settings the amp will be louder than with a less efficient speaker. 60 watts is correct and would be fine and dandy with a MAZ SR or Galaxie.

The reason why some Celestion speakers have this 30 number in their name is to do with the adoption of the metric system in the UK. Quite simply 12" is approximately equal to 30cm.

The WGS v30 clone is sweeter in the top end than a real v30- I'm very happy pairing it with a Greenback even though there is an efficiency difference. The WGS is available through ebay and at $21 not such a bad deal! Brett

I'm glad there are so many threads like this one about matching speakers with amps. It sounds like I need to be searching for a V30 for my recently purchased Ghia.
Those of you who have used the 30 with a Ghia - at what volume level do you really say good-bye to the clean zone? Right now I can go to 10 o'clock with my Eminence Wizard, but I notice the overdrive isn't as smooth as I'd like. It's good, but I've heard it do better through my son's cabinet.
