:)Today I went back to the local music store that had a used Jaz 20/40 and played my Telecaster thru it. Well it sounded real good so within the next couple of weeks I should be the owner of a DR Z Jaz 20/40. The Amp is Blond and it has what I like Reverb and Trem.

Zpilot I play 60's music Beatles, Byrds, Beach Boys, Bobby Fuller Four, Paul Revere and the Raiders. Those are just a few and there are others I do not have an amp when I played in the band the Bass played had an old 1967 Vox Royal Guardsman SS that I played thru

doctorice what style of music do you play? When I got home yesterday I looked on the web for the Jaz 20/40 just to see if there was any price difference from the one that I played thru. I did find the Jaz 20/40 Head for less then the 1X12 combo. Now the head is brand new and as I said the combo is used. So is just having the Head and going with a Cab with 2X10 or 212 or 4X10 is the sound any different compared to a 1X12?

If I had a choice I would opt for the head. It's lighter and gives you the option of speaker configurations depending on your preferences. In a combo there is some interaction between the tubes and the speakers because of induced vibration that may or may not be a good thing. It can give you better sustain and more harmonics. Using the combo also limits you to an open back cabinet unless you want to use an extension cabinet. The 1x12 combo is going to sound considerably different than the other cabinets you listed. Since your doing Byrds/Beatles type stuff I think I would go with the Dr's 2x10 cabinet (my favorite) or a 2x12 with a Celestion Blue/Gold combination. You're gonna love doing that stuff through a JAZ. I had a Vibrolux Reverb back in '67 and when I had a chance to play through a Royal Guardsman I thought it was going to be great. It wasn't. All those great sounds you hear on the records were done through AC-15/AC-30's or Fender tube amps. The JAZ will nail those tones. By the way, are you playing 12-string on those songs. If so, I'm envious.

doctorice what style of music do you play? I'm pretty focused on blues/blues rock since that is what my gigging band does. I also am in a less active group that plays a lot of 60s material: just like you (just like me) When I got home yesterday I looked on the web for the Jaz 20/40 just to see if there was any price difference from the one that I played thru. I did find the Jaz 20/40 Head for less then the 1X12 combo. Now the head is brand new and as I said the combo is used. I got a 2x10 combo (new) at a very good price when the amp was discontinued. Side note: have you checked out the Boss BC-2 pedal? It's meant to be an AC-30 in a box. There are some video links and discussion over in the Effects section.

Teardrop - are you talking about the blonde 1x12 combo at Mass Steet Music? That is my amp. If you have any questions about it, please don't hesitate to ask me.

So is just having the Head and going with a Cab with 2X10 or 212 or 4X10 is the sound any different compared to a 1X12? Holy BeJeez yeah the sound is different! Nothing wrong wth one 12", mind you, but picking up a couple different speakered cabs over the years makes for a lot of variation in sound. It's a lotta fun to have a few different cabs to play through, and not crazy expensive to get into. That being said, you can play the 1-12 combo through cabs, too. So either way, can't go wrong. A 1-12 is a great grab-and-go rig for quicky runs to a gig or jam. Enjoy! jj still need to get me a 1-12 Z rig for the same purpose. the jaz just might be the perfect choice what with the 20-40 thang and a master vol and reverb/tremolo. might need to get the doc to make me a cab to swing my head into.
