A friends Ghia is making a loud steady background noise. Checked the tubes and they are all lit up and none seem to be microphonic. We don't have any spare tubes here. Any suggestions on which one is causing this loud white noise. Thanks. jb

Gotta get some spare tubes.
In the mean time, take each tube out and then re-seat it. I started getting some noise in my Maz Jr. I started swapping tubes one by one and found the bad one. I then put back in the rest of the old tubes. Then for the heck of it, I put back in the 'bad' tube. The noise wasn't there any more. It must have just rattled itself a little loose.

excellent advice. Noisey tubes aren't always microphonic. I'd start with a fresh set of output tubes. If you want to have some fun pick up a different type of el84s than you already have, just to see the difference in tube types. The ghia is a great amp to test different tube types. After trying a fresh set of output tubes go to the preamp tubes if the problem remains. Again try different types, I like the GT 12ax7m for it's livey response, YMMV. If you want more headroom try a nos 5751 in V1.
