Hey guys, Because the Stangray is a class A amp, does this mean it doesn't sound the best unless pushed to a certain level? I've been told that class A/B amps are better. Also, how often do you have to change tubes in a class A, since they don't last as long. Thanks, Jason

The Stangray sounds great a many volumes. I've used my set clean for small gigs and at my house. It is easy to get a nice tone from the ray at low volumes. Almost all tube amps beg to be cranked, so I don't think you can really say A/B vs A is better at a low volume. You will also find that true Class A operation is a tricky subject. The Stangray is very close to class A.
I've run a set of tubes in my Stingray for a couple of years with no issues. A cathode biased amp, like the ray will go through EL84s, but how long do you expect them to last? It seems that new tubes, in general, have a shorter lifespan than old tubes. EL84s aren't known for long life, but then again, they are relatively cheap. You can get a matched quad for $50-ish.
The ray is a really great amp, you won't be disapointed.
