I like the idea of a low watt amp. I currently own a Maz 38 but would like an amp half the power of my Maz38. I have heard allot of great reviews on both the Maz18 and the Ghia. I like the idea of the reverb in the Maz18 but have been told these 2 amps are really VERY different amps. I am very curious about a Carmen Ghia but I want reverb. The Maz 18 has reverb but some people say its not as nice sounding as the Ghia. Some help here would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I think both sound very good. The Maz is louder, much more tweakable, and has more clean headroom than the ghia. The ghia may have a slight edge in tone (and simplicity), but it really depends on what you like.
I never miss reverb anymore, these amps are both so full and fat sounding.

If I were you, I'd get the Ghia. Don't worry about the reverb because a spring reverb pedal like a Van-Amps Soul-Mate sounds incredible in front of the amp. Yea - A Maz 18 would be great, but it's essentially the same amp as the 38. Diversify ;D

Since you already have a Maz 38, I would go with the Ghia rather than the Maz 18. The Ghia is a fun amp.

A friend of mine and I are going over this same problem with his rig. If you want reverb and or a loop then the decision has already been made for you. If your looking for simplicity and very little clean headroom (depending on the tubes used to some extent) then the CG is killer. Both amps are great, but I think it depends on what bells and whistles are needed and ultimately if you want a Master Volume. Don't be afraid of owning a Jr. and a Sr., both are killer amps and have there own sounds.

I am really leaning towards a Carmen Ghia I think.

It's a great amp, especially if ya just wanna rock, ya know. Crank it to 10 and put a OD pedal in front of it and watch out.

Saltydog, there's a Z dealer in Ottawa. Why not go and play a Ghia there to get an idea?

I've had my Ghia now for about a month. I have a Maz Jr too. I keep meaning to do some recordings to compare them side by side, but I've just been having fun with the Ghia. (I'm planning on firing up the Maz this weekend.)
So, they're similar and different. The Ghia seems to be a little more focused when you really overdrive it and it remains tighter on the bottom end and throughout. While I leave the Ghia on 10, I can still back off on my guitar volume control to clean it up and keep a strong sound.
I saw someone else describe the Ghia as a little sports car and I think that it fits. It's interior isn't fancy, but the suspension is nice and tight, and it's just built to go and handle like a champ.
