I tried one of the new Marshall Handwired and really liked it for low volume Marshall sound. However, I already have a speaker cabinet so the Ghia is screaming "save money".
Anyone compare? They are similar in tubes (different rectifier) and tone stack. Non-tremelo channel is just volume and tone.
Will the Ghia crunch as much?

I've never compared the two, but the Ghia's got some crunch. I just don't see the Marshall being NEAR the amp the Ghia is. I have compared my Ghia to a Plexi style boutique and, although I was able to get similar tones, the Ghia is so much more articulate. It's truly a beautiful amp.

My interest in the Marshall is probably more collectible than anything else. I don't think I can stomach the pain of buying a 1960's Marshall so I've been checking out the reissues.
My interest in the Ghia is lower volume classic rock crunch. I have the Rt 66 and I would love to hear that type crunch at a lower volume. Like Led Zeppelin II
I would think a 2 EL-84 amp using the Rt66/Kt45/Z28 tone stack would be a great addition to the Z family too.

Just the other night or singer picked up my guitar on break and played along with "Shook me all night long" and there was quite a bit of similarity in the tone on the record and my Ghia cranked up to 3 through a 30w Weber Alnico Blue...and that was with a tele! I bet you could get real close with a Paul.

I don't know too much about the physical differences between the 1974x and the Ghia. I do know however that I would buy the Ghia before the Marshall any day of the week. I was shopping around for amps a couple years ago and really took a liking to the 1974x. That was until of course I heard a Ghia - at that point, my decision was made - half the price for a better sounding amp. Go w/ the Ghia - save the dough! Maz 18 would be sweet too!

The Marshall is a cool amp, but a bit pricey. I kinda like the CG better, it doesn't have quite as much gain, but it's got more tones in there than the 1974. And the Marshall's are all different, line up 10 and they'll all be a different. The Doc's amps will be way more consistent. If you have to have 18 watt Marshall and want to spend the $$ look at a 65amps London. Then again I'm buying a CG to go along with my London, it'll be 18 watt heaven.

I've also heard there's quite a depreciation hit with the Marshall.

I can't wait to play my Carmen Ghia in stereo with my MAZ Jr.
It's cool though every piece of gear that I have had to wait for has always been better than I even expected. : pacing :

If you are looking for Zep II sounds with a Tele or a Paul, I would stear you to the Z28 cranked. Very much in line with the old Supro sound, but bigger, badder and more articulate. The Maz 18 should get close as well.

I was just thinking the same thing Don, every clip I've heard sounds great. I also agree with Jaininedoubly, the Z28 will do the Supro Zep tones for sure cranked up. It's a superb amp. Still don't think it nails Zep like the 66 though. But you just might be able to play a Z28 cranked whereas most likely you won't be able to crank your 66 in a small club. Which brings us back to the master volume on the Maz 18!!! ;D
