Definitely would recommend some Gold Lion reissue KT66s in the medium range. A new balanced 12ax7LPS phase inverter is a good idea too. If the EF86 is not microphonic I would leave it alone, especially if it is NOS. The amp should be plenty loud. Most people recommend an attenuator. I would stay away from them if you don't use them for your other amps (that's really personal preference on my part, ymmv)
Congrats and karma on the new purchase. Keep us up to date on what ya find out. Welcome to the forum too.

WOW! All forms of equalization are dimed (which I highly reccommend:<) and NO BREAK-UP with a humbucker equiped guitar? No clue on my part but I am floored at the thought. Calling Dr. Z....... Calling Dr. Z..... come in Dr. Z; I think perhaps an impostor is making your amps. Please advise! From blues to classic rock this amp should cover it! Good luck. Merks

That doesn't sound like a 66 at all... Something's not right. Mine is very very loud... Louder than a 50watt Marshall.. Louder than a vox ac30... Loud! And with a humbucker equipped guitar, I have to keep the tone controls low to keep it clean.... With treble @1, and volume @ 2... The amp is quite dirty. Dimmed, you should have beautiful distortion... But it should be too loud.
I had a gz34 and switched to a 5u4 to keep the volume under control... And it's still really loud.

First you need a multimeter that can handle 500-600 VDC. Set the meter to measure the highest DC voltage. The amp must be turned on as if you are going to play. Make sure the amp is hooked to a proper speaker. The volume should be all the way down. Doesn't matter where the tone knobs are. No guitar plugged into the amp. Find a good ground for the negative terminal of the multimeter. The chassis usually works well for that. If you look closely at the bottom of the tube socket you will see that each pin is numbered from 1-8. Touch the positive terminal of the meter to pin three of one of the output tubes. It's good to get a reading from both tubes. Do them one at a time. Be careful not to touch any other pins. The meter will tell you the voltage. Be very careful there are seriously deadly high voltages under there. And more than enough amperage to kill you dead several times over. Keep one hand in your pocket when taking measurements.

Low volume clean tones with the knobs max, a LP into Greenbacks, the 66 doesn't sound well to me.
If your tests come up empty give repairs@drzamps.com an E-Mail, we'll get the amp back and fix it up.
BTW what is the serial number?

If it's that one that was just listed on Ebay (the black one) it's a 2009 model.

I wouldn't be surprised if the previous owner had an output tube go bad and take out a screen grid resistor. Pretty cool that the Doc chimed in. These are definitely his babies.

Howdy,
Call me "obsequious", call me a "crawler" (John's term from "A Hard Day's Night"), but one has to be impressed that the CEO himself answered this thread about a second hand amp! Mr. Zaite, you've earned my bidness when I look for my next fine amp!
