Don't get me wrong Jimi is one of my ALL TIME FAVS, there isn't anything I don't like about him. But I see all over the forums of these guys arguing over what pedal gets the most "Authentic" JH tone (Uni-Vibe). I like Vibe, I have a great Vibe (Mojo), I don't use it much at all. And even when I do I don't sound like JH. Never have, never will. There are some guys who use it and it sounds GREAT, but I've never understood the obsession with trying to cop someone else's tone. I personally like it when I hear other great players covering a JH tune and knock it out of the park by playing with feeling and their own style and of course putting just enough JH into it so you know what it is. I really love it when people hear BW and wonder what pedals/gear he's using to get "that" tone...and only to find out its all him. But I'm convinced that tuner is some how enhancing his tone.

When I was playing in a rock band I bought a univibe type pedal. I had to force it's use because there aren't very many appropriate uses for it. That wasn't fair to the songs so I soon took it off the pedal board. By the way, I feel the same. There'll never be another Jimi.

So true. And all it takes is a pedal to sound like Jimi? I've missed out.

Well I never thought that much of Jimi's vibe sounds, but his tone in general, especially his clean tone, was second to none. Guys try to get that tone because it is literally one of the best tones of all time. Unfortunately, much of it was his technique, not his gear. I say unfortunately because if I could design a pedal or an amp or a guitar that was guaranteed to make you sound like that, I'd be rich overnight. But the dude was just a great player - shoot...

I think because that sound inspired 40 years of growing guitarists... 40 years!!! And he still shines. Even if no one will ever get that tone!!

Re: Why does everyone want to sound like J.H.?
Why does everyone want to sound like Jaye Hanson? Answer - Because he plays a Route 66 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I've seen threads on forums that if guys met in the street they would brawl over what sounds more like JH. Crazy.
I agree JH's clean tone was great, songs like Castles Made Of Sand, Little Wing, WOWOWOWOWOW! It's not his tone so much as his playing.

Maybe some people don't have their own voice, or don't know how to find it because of how they learned to play or something. So they cop their heroes. I think you should try to sound like yourself, if possible. But playing cover tunes it's probably important to sound like who you're covering. Who knows? Don't even get me started on relic'ed guitars..... :\

Guitar players will always aspire to sound like the guitar players they admire, at least to some degree. To me the mark of a really unique player is one that is very difficult to mimic. I remember when I first heard Texas Flood I thought SRV sounded a lot like Hendrix. Now when I hear that record it just sounds like Stevie. The Hendrix influence is just a part of his style. Of all the people that have copped some of Jimi's thing I think he did it the best. I've never really tried to cop anyone myself, though I have my favorite players like anyone else. I'll adapt licks that I like, try to get tones that are similar to that of my heroes. The strange thing is that whenever someone likens my playing style to someone famous it's usually someone I like but have never actively sought to copy that much, if at all. Go figure.

I don't know? I have always been more obsessed w/ finding my own unique tone and playing style. It is infinitely harder to not play like or have the tone of some of your favorite players. It's fairly simple to come really close to the Hendrix sound and tone - although his playing is another story - Practice and talent perhaps will get you in the general area. I always prefer hearing guitarists that keep their sound as dry as possible.

I do like Jimi's tones. Not ALL of them, but some of them are beautiful and others powerful. I do like the sound of the vibe, although to be honest I hear more vibe from Gilmour than Hendrix. Jimi's clean was GREAT. I love some of his fuzztones but I've never been able to replicate them nor is that a big deal. Chances are I won't cover too many JH tunes, no need for the exact sound.
