Well I went to the music store to try out the MI Audio Crunch Box because a bud likes his. But they sold the darn thing before I could check it out. One thing led to another and I ended up buying a Barber Burn Unit. Interesting box - two channels, with volume and gain controls on each. One channel has a tone control, and the other has a dynamics control. I haven't been able to try it on the Stingray yet (that's this weekend) but I got it on the pedal board and did some prelims last night through the KT-45 side of my 6545. Unfortunately I had to throw the RC Booster off the board to make room - we shall see if that was reasonable. First impression is that the Burn Unit is a lot more grainy than the BB Preamp - I can get similar tones, but the BB is like velvet to the Burn Unit's sandpaper. That could be a useful difference. The Burn Unit is also pretty bright, and the lone tone control really doesn't control that aspect - it might be that I'll have to turn the cut control down a bit on the Stingray. We'll see. As always, nothing sounds the same once you get out on a gig, so I'm curious how this unit will perform. More as I get it...

I had an old 4 knob B/U and it was very impressive. The two channel I tried at Flynn's in Evanston had a fizziness I didn't care for at the time, but Barber may have gotten that handled with tweaks to the design since then.

They had a "mini burn unit" there that had four knobs - one channel. I didn't try it - lunch hour and I had already burned 45 minutes fiddling with this one!

Thanks, I might take you up on that, but right now my pedal board is full up! If I like the burn unit, I think I'm going to have to cop a Lefty and say "I'm done"...
