Has anyone ever used these in their SRZ's? Or will it even work? I know alot of the HIGain Mods to Like Marshall amp users Zach Wylde , Neil Schon, Kerry King etc.. all use the 6550's? Responses are Appreciated, Jamie

Hey Jamie! Wow, that is a good question. I'd have to think about that one Just off the top I'd guess that the bias voltage supply might have to be modded; 6550's bias up differently than EL34's and you might not have enough "range" to get there. As always I reserve judgement until I hear it, but my first thought is that I'm not a big fan of power tube distortion from 6550's. I think the guys that use them in Marshalls either use a pedal up front for overdrive and are looking for a really clean power section, or they like the trashy distortion side of things (K King). Jimi reportedly used 6550's in his Marshalls but he ran the fuzz pedal quite a lot. I always thought that some of Jimi's clean studio stuff sounded like 6550's or 6L6's to me but when a studio is involved you can make anything sound like anything The SRZ does a great job of being able to balance preamp OD vs power tube OD via the master volume and volume controls. Going to 6550's would definitely not be the sound the Doc had in his head when he designed the amp. It might be really cool in its own right...you never know till you try
