I'm wondering if anyone has experience with and can comment on onboard boosts -- by that I mean on the guitar -- like the Clapton mid boost. There are others, I see one or two on eBay. EMG makes a couple - the Afterburner, the SPC (Strat Presence Control) and one or two others. I have some experience with the Clapton mid boost and am curious how the other boosts compare. I like the idea of having a boost where I can have direct control over it with a knob on the guitar, as opposed to a stomp box where its impossible to modify the settings mid-song and its either fully engaged or not. Anyone ..... ?

I had one of the Mexican Powerhouse Deluxes for a few years that are built with a 12 dB mid boost (half the Clapton's, I think). It made a real difference... The full on mid boost took the strat's quack away and made it a little heftier and thick sounding. I haven't tried anything else and if you've used the Clapton model you already know the terrain.
You might check out the system G&L uses, with seperate full range treble and bass controls and a mini switch that lets you engage all three PUs or front and back. Not a mid boost, but this allows almost unlimited sound combinations, especially with the Z pickup equipped models.
