I'd like to zero in on a country twang sound. Using a Maz Jr and a tele, I'm wondering if I should be using a compressor.
I've always shy-ed away from compressors...always feeling the amp should compress on it's own. But I've heard some people in this forum say a compressor helps with the twang sound.
Anyone have experience?

Hey gtrman, I don't think a comperssor is required and alot of great twang can be had from just your Maz and Tele. However alot fo the great country players use compression more for some sublte spank than major squish factor. Brent Mason, Johnny Hiland and Brad Paisley use comperssion of varrying degrees, where as Ray Flacke, Pete Anderson, and James Burton, don't use it very much, if at all. It depends alot on what type of tone you are after. For me I use my Keeley Compressor all the time for country stuff, it just adds that little extra whatever it is I like to my sound. I am not a very good describer of tone I just know what i like when I hear it. So to make a short answer long try a compressor and see what you think of it and really tweak the knobs to determine how much squish you want. Hope I helped you somewhat. Have fun!!!

another + for the Keeley compressor. I find it particularly effective when volume is an issue in smaller venues. It really helps tame the beast. Another tool worth having in the tool box.

I just borrowed a BBE "main squeeze" and I really like it. Relatively quiet, totally transparent, true bypass and a steal @ $116. I have owned the keeley as well and the BBE gets the same job done just fine.

I have the 4 knob Keeley. I would've bought the 2 knob but I scored this one for the same price so I bought it. I can never remember what the two bottom knobs do so I never get my pedal set right. I'm getting a little irritated about it. Now i have to find the instructions and start over. Having said that, I'd suggest getting a 2 knob. I'm even thinking about going back to my old green Guyatone. It's a great compressor in it itself. My real feeling is, they are all good so don't worry too much about it. Just get one and use it.

I have the Keeley and the Boss CS-3. The Keeley has been on my board for the last couple of years, and is great with both knobs at 10-11 o'clock. The Boss in my opinion was actually more suited to the country chikn-pikn because it had a little more pop/cluck to the notes. The Keeley is much smoother/quieter/ and more transparent. If you're just curious at this point, try the Boss as it's $79 new as opposed to the Keeley $219. For a starting point on the Boss, set the 2 knobs on the left to 12 o'clock, and the 2 knobs on the right to about 1:30. Pretty good country spank in that zone. Good luck Harold

Some Z's work well with a comp, others not so well IMO. In my experience, they worked well with the Maz Jr. I used a Visual Sounds rt 66, or a Carl Martin comp with it. With my Stingray I use either an Allum modded Boss CS3, or a Barber Tone Press. Like Harold said, there's more obvious "country" influence with the Boss. With the Route 66 or RxES w/ overdose on, I saw/see little reason to put a comp in the chain.

I've tried many compressors before, but imo, the Keeley Compressor is the way to go. So much control and you don't have to deal with the attack as it's set internally.

I own a Keeley comp, nice pedal, with every knob at 10 - 11 it's very trasparent, for some country style at 12 - 1. But as I said in other places of Z forum since I have R66 I don't use it very often, just for some clean in country style. However, it helps expecially in fast notes for attack and clearness.

Dr.T Keeley Comp is a must have pedal for me.I adjust it to blend with the amp so I can leave it on all the time. dock66

What settings?? I have both knobs to 11 ... But it seems to eliminate some harmonics doin' compression, so I use it when I want a certain attack, but the most I prefere clean tone of R66, with his own compression. Dosen't use it with distortion.

Dr.T I believe I set Keeley 2 knob version tone and level at noon. And the 4 knob version tone and level at noon and the other two knobs at 11-1:00 if I remember correctly. dock66
