So, what have you done to squeeze out those last few drops of sweet, precious tone?
I just replaced all of the pre-amp tubes with some NOS Tungsrams. I was surprised by the very noticable difference. The tone is warmer, rounder and a bit less strident, while retaining all of the definition and clarity. Nice!

I replaced the rectifier with a NOS British Mullard just for reliability & piece of mind....Couldn't tell the difference in sound. Interesting about the Tungsrams. I'm not ready to go there yet. Sound too amazing to tinker...IMO.

I have a NOS Phillips rectifier that will end up in mine, but so far I can't find time to do much more than just play it.

Just received my Mullard GZ34 and various other goodies. Earlier on I rolled some pre-tubes in there including a 5751 to see what happens when I lower gain a little. Ended up with RCA 12AX7s in all 3 positions. Got rid of the little fizz I was hearing. More tone-shaping today.

To early for me to roll tubes in Z-Wreck. I like the tubes that they came in so far.

Yeah - Somehow I miss the point of buying any Z amp your like and than screwing around with it. No such thing as improving on perfection..Although I do understand the lure of tweaking something..

Yes I find long plate RCA 12AX7's to be a bit on the warmer/dull side of the tone palate.

Dr.Z, I read on a tube vendor site that your all time favorites are the pre-war EI 12AX7s from Yugoslavia. Is this true? I have 1 and could get some more to try and will certainly go the distance if indeed these are your favorites. I trust your ears... Thanks.

Boy those are WONDERFUL sounding tubes. Love them in any Cathode Follower circuit based amp.
BUT ,the big but is that they are hard to find in good condition. The early Pre-War ones are the best mid 80's, I used them in all my early SRZ-65's. If you can find a bootleg of an early 90's Eagle Hell Freezes Over show you can hear JW playing his SRZ loaded with old Ei's.

I have found a source. www.nostubestore.com/2010/03/ei-elektronska-industrija-ecc83.htmlThey also have very nicely priced Mullard GZ34s and other great tubes in amazing shape. Most of their stock comes from NATO military supplies so labeling is not necessarily all consumer but the goods are real. No relationship to them other than being a happy customer. Ok. Let me run & order those EIs before all the folk here run the prices up!!! Cheers
