I like Dr. Z amps. I used to own a Maz18 and I think for the price they are great amps. However I don't think I could own another unless Mr. Z releases a Route66 combo. A combo is all I need, and I know I can get a small cab blah blah but I want a combo of the Route66! Is there some type of design/construction reason that there is no combo as of now? Just curious.

DC here!
Yes there is actually - the preamp tube EF86 penthode as a very high gain factor twice that of the more common 12AX7 tube.
The early Vox AC15 & AC30 (Pre top bost models) used the same EF86 preamptube. However maybe due to the high gain factor the EF86 tubes are a bit fragile and more prone to go microphoninc.
With thirty watts or more in a combo amp the vibrations can get rather a bit to much and coupled with the mechanical wear and tear - will make a EF86 tube amp much less reliable.
Thats one og the reasons - when the VOX AC30 came out they soon switched to the less gainy 12AX7 tubes. My guess is thats why Doc dont make the Route66 a combo amp.

I actuall emailed the Doc a few years ago about this, and he said he'd never make a combo version because there was "too much glass" in the Route 66.

DC here! I broke one of my NOS GEC KT66 tubes a few months back - Dont know if it was electrical or simply moving the top too soon too carelessly after a finished gig. Doc said those NOS GEC are/were nice tubes but fragile - so thats why he uses other brands - + plus they are pricey and scarce of course. Cheers: Dixiechicken!
