Well, I've got a set of ANOS power tubes on the way. It's a set of Tung Sol 5881's (6L6WGB). I'm really looking forward to getting them. I know I'll be right at the limit of what the Tung Sol's can handle, but, hopefully it'll sound sweet. I know Tony (T-Rock) has a set of JAN 6L6WGB's in his Gal (or at least he did as far as I know) and said they were sweet. I'm gonna bias them kinda cold to start and go from there. I'm expecting some loss of clean headroom, but that's fine with me. Anyway, I'm stoked! I'll post back and let y'all know how they sound.....

I'm pretty sure you'll dig those. I don't think you notice much of a clean headroom loss, but they will smooth out ch2 quit a bit.
Interested to hear what you think.

I'll let ya know, Tony. The only thing that concerns me is that they're "rated" to 400v on the plates and are 23w tubes, since they're 5881's and not 6L6wgb's (470v and 26w). But, supposedly, the Tung Sol's are pretty robust and should be able to handle the Galaxie. We shall see. I'm looking forward to hearing the difference. Like I said, I've never had a set of NOS power tubes ;D

Ok, so I put them in, fired it up, biased to about 30ma (they're about 2.5ma apart, which is good, but not a super tight match) and all I can say is DAYUM!! These puppies are sweet! The cleans are rich harmonically, the overdriven tone on chan1 is to die for (especially with the tone controls about noon-ish and the volume at about 3 O'clock. But, clean, I didn't loose as much headroom as I thought I would. Plus, the quality of the cleans is excellent. It's really nice with my strat on the neck and just a touch of hair on it. Then, when I really dig in, it just blooms into lovely power tube distortion!
You're right, Tony, the really smoothed out chan2. The drive is even better now. Very, very..... well, smooth! That's absolutely the best word to describe them all-around. I need to snatch me up another set for backups, just in case...... I can't believe I waited so long to do this- well worth it.

Tellin' ya bruthr....this amp, is the best kept secret DrZ has.
Peeps plugs into it, don't take the time to learn how the tone stack interacts w/the gain structure, and say..."Sounds good, just not for me".
I hope it stays that way.
6L6's have always been my faves.
I would LOVE, to see a DrZ, 1x6L6, 1/2 power(ala Remedy), channel switching, 1x10 Galaxie Jr combo. Talk about a grab-n-go that'll make you leave your OD pedals at home......juss sayin'.

Amen to that, Tony. Everytime I play this amp, I grin from ear to ear. I treat the tone knobs almost like a preamp volume that tweaks EQ. It does take a while to figure out where all of the tones are, I still haven't found them all. To add to that, I like to swap tubes, too, as you can see ;D. Right now, I have NOS in all positions and this amp has never sounded better. Don't get me wrong, it was awesome right out of the box. But for those who use NOS stuff, you know the difference that I'm talking about.
Btw, Tony, I'm also using the Weber Silver/Blue 30w alnico combo in my 2-12. Love that combination!! Come to find out, I had actually blown one of them at some point. Which I'm still trying to figure out because it had only been used with 18w amps before the Galaxie. It had been making an odd noise when I was pushing them. Anyway, I sent them back to Weber and had them reconed and changed over to 16ohm impedance. Now, no more ohms mismatch between my 2-12 and my 1-12. Both of them plugged in is sweet-like having my own 2/3 stack.

I have to agree with T Rock on the Gal. This amp has a few challenges, but lots of reward if you just work with it. Mine does not have the master volume mod (yet), but channel 2 really makes my best pedals sing at low volumes. Keeley Fuzzhead, and my Lovepedal COT sound brilliant on channel 2. They sound great on channel 1 but different. When I demo my Dr. Z's for people they can believe that I turn the knobs completely from left to right and anywhere in between. Most are so Fender minded and turn all knobs between 4,5,6 or straight up. Turn those knobies!
