Is it ok to switch between 1/2 power and full power when the amp is in standby to hear the difference or does the amp need to be off in order to do this without damaging anything? Just curious because i would like to see which setting I prefer. I was using all 1/2 power due to volume, but you z brothers keep raving about how good it sounds on Full power the infamous "swirl". Another question how much louder is it. I knwo its double the wattage but i'm pretty sure that doesnt mean its twice as loud. Steve that last question i probably for you to answer

I switch mine whenever I like - power off, power on, in standby, with standby off - I just don't play while I'm switching it. So far so good...

THe amp doesn't have to be off. At Z-Fest 2009, I saw Z put the amp in standby, change speakers and flip the 1/2 power switch. I put mine in stdby, but it works on the fly too as I've tried it that way with the Remedy and JAZ. For the second question, I'll give it a shot... Twice the wattage is about +3db. But to most ears, +9 db is the doubling of "sounding twice as loud". +3db is quite a bit to some and not so much to others. With everything else remaining the same, I think for a 20 watt amp to be "twice as loud" you need to use 200 watts or 10 times more. Going from a less efficient speaker to a more efficient speaker can do the same thing. Here's a good reference from Myles. www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/differences.htmlSome people relate it to clean headroom. A Remedy at 1/2 power 20 watts doesn't stay a clean when you dime it but it's still pretty loud. Flip it to full power or 40 watts and it's louder but the clean is almost the reason why to some ears.

Great post bluzman!! 3db doesn't add much but it can be a bit noticeable especially if we have all our hearing still... Never needed more than 40 or 50 watts even with the loudest band..

As a pro in the world of occupational health, there is what we call a 3db doubling effect. It takes twice the power to raise any sound to three db (on the A-scale).
This is the science part......tonally is the art part of this equation.
Peace and save your hearing, -Jeff-
