The RX Jr. head and Avatar 210 cab arrived about a week ago. I didn't want to post a review until I had a chance to spend some time with it. Now I can confidently say that I love this amp! The only other Z experience I have is with my Carmen Ghia, an amp that I thought couldn't be topped but I think the CG may have been bumped to second place! In comparing the 2 amps the Rx Jr definitely is louder and has more headroom. The master volume makes it pretty easy to dial in the degree of grind that you're after and all of this makes for an amp that is certain to be more versatile than the GHia. I think it is safe to say that it has a tighter, more focused tone than the Ghia and while I think it will cover any musical genre very well I can't help but think the Rx leans towards the rock side while the Ghia is a superb blues amp. The Avatar cab has a Ragin Cajun and a Weber alnico and the combination sounds good however I was surprised that when cranked the bottom end was a bit flabby. Plugged in my 112 Z cab with the Celestion Blue and whoa baby! Pure heaven. I don't have a humbucker equipped guitar to try but I can tell you that the Rx Jr., like the Ghia, loves my Tele, Strat and P90 equipped Thornton Blues Queen. The only thing I'm scratching my head about is-why the hell did the guy sell this amp?! It is an absolute sweetheart.

The Rx Jr is one contagious little beast. Hard to beat the tone of a Z cab. I think in time though, you'll find the right sweet spot to dial out that flabbiness with the 2x10. And you're so right - it's hard to understand why anyone would let go of a Jr.
Great to hear you're having a good time with the new amp.

Glad you are loving the RxJr. I'm digging mine more than my Ghia as well!

With the extremely functional master volume, the OD option, and the EF86 in the preamp section, this amp along with my Z28 has kept me from bonding with my recently acquired Maz 18 NR. It kills with all my cabs and all my guitars plus is pedal friendly (effects or the OD's). Congrats on a great amp!

Yup, I would really love to try this with a Z 210 cab and see how it compares to the Avatar.

I'm convinced that these amps prefer British style speakers so I've ordered a pair of Celestion G10 Vintage to replace the Emi and Weber. I'm convinced this will help me feel the Avatar love!

I have a question re your Avatar cab. I ask this because I had one for a brief period and sold it - bought it directly from them and it came loaded with Celestion 10's, but it was a big cab for 10's. It appears in this cab I had they may have just changed out the baffle to change it to 12's (and still have room). Either way I was not pleased with the sound of the cab with my Fuchs Lucky 7 head, my Maz 38 combo going into it, or a Z28 I had at that time. It turned me off to 10" cabs until I got the Docs 10" cab. So I just wondering if it's may be your cabinet and not your speakers. Just a thought. Good luck though and don't give up on this amp, please!

Good luck though and don't give up on this amp, please! Don't worry, the Rx Jr isn't going anywhere! It's a definite keeper. I'll see about the Avatar cab though and don't get me wrong, it sounded very nice with the Emi and Weber speaker but I think it'll sound better with the Celestions. Plus, I'm a believer that running an amp out of the 8 ohm jack sounds a bit better than the 4 ohm which only uses half the output transformer. Crazy perhaps? The Celestion G10 is a magical speaker in my opinion and while the doc's 210 cab is likely the ultimate I'm pretty optimistic about a pair of the 16 ohm G10's. Curious, was your Avatar cab closed back or the oval open back?

It came as an open back, but it was just so big - seemed like I could've fit 4 10's in there. I do know they have different cabs to fit your budget and this was not an expensive one so that may have been my downfall - lesser build quality. Anyway, that was just a thought I had when you mentioned struggling with low end.

Thanks. I think my Avatar cab is smaller than what you describe. The speakers are positioned diagonally rather than side by side and the cab is just an inch or two bigger than my smaller old style Z 112 cabinet. I'll keep you posted on my progress although it'll take a week to get the speakers and a bit more time to break them in.

Is your 1x12 cab a Z cab?
Dude just plug the RxJ in that Cel.Blue and forget about those 10's

It's a great sounding amp if it had a effects loop for reverb I would seriously be looking for another one. Right now I'm caught between looking for a new amp or Grosh.

I want to tell you the Greenback 10's for the sound but they are like 96db and not loud enough to hang with a Blue. Weber ceramic blue pups but that maybe the same deal.
Sell the Avatar cab and buy a matching Z 2x10 cab and put the 2x10 cab on the bottom. The massive bottom of the 10's will blend nicely with the Blue......
