Howdy folks, Proud Dr. Z player here. My band, The Bright Light Social Hour, is on the cusp of releasing our first full-length record. We are now streaming the first track, "Shanty." You can listen to it here: soundcloud.com/thebrightlightsocialhour/shantyRecording this album was a gear nerd dream. We recorded all summer long in Austin, TX with producer Danny Reisch. Drums and bass were recorded to 2" tape - lots of vintage mics, great outboard, etc. Guitars, keys, and vocals were tracked to Pro Tools HD with a killer selection of classic vintage instruments, e.g. Hammond organ with Leslie, Fender Rhodes, Neumann mics, etc. On this song, I used my Fender Custom Shop Tele, loaded with a Lollar Vintage T in the bridge and a Low-Wind Imperial humbucker in the neck. I plugged into an Analogman Beano Boost (used for many of the slide parts), a beautiful Maestro Echoplex, and a Dr. Z Route 66 into a Z-Best cabinet loaded with a 12" Scumback Scumnico (30 watt) and a 12" Tone Tubby AlNiCo. We mic'd the Scumnico with a Royer R121 into a Great River MP-500NV preamp and some light compression from a UA 1176. Later on, we added some reverb from a real deal, sounds-like-heaven EMT 140 plate (also used on the vocals). I doubled a few of the rhythm tracks with a Dr. Z Carmen Ghia - same setup otherwise. Let me know what y'all think. I'll post more tracks in the coming weeks. Feel free to check our website for updates or ask me any questions about the recording you might have. Thanks, Curtis The Bright Light Social Hour www.thebrightlightsocialhour.com
