The Ghia head I had was pretty special, but I ended up trading it for the Z-28 (combo, then head) I own now. Both are great gig amps, but there were some occasions where the Ghia fell short. There simply wasn't enough of it, even with a closed-back cab to help with projection. Not a bad sound built into it, though. Doc set up the EQ right where it needs to be. The Z-28 put me right at that perfect power range for being able to use the amp like I want...cranked, but still a manageable volume for most of my gigs. Clean to dirty as is simple as a tweak of the guitar volume knob, and the tone controls have a direct impact on the gain. For a three knob amp, it's very versatile yet still "gig friendly"...you don't have to spend a lot of time dialing in a good sound.

I A-B'd the CG and Z-28 through two different cabs, see the thread
Would you match a Ghia with a closed back V30?
It may not really anwer your question as I was checking out a V-30 cab, but it showed how differently the amps behaved. I agree with UnclePat, the CG breaks up earlier, has that EL84 sound and can struggle unless miked up. I have had no problem with the Z-28 which cuts and soars above everything at the moderate levels we play at. Its a tough choice as they both sound great - we are reheasing in a tiny studio tomorrow and I'll take the CG, and have no doubt that it will take over as amp of choice after a few weeks of only running the Z-28!
What I DO want to try is running both amps together - could that the best 40watt rig in the universe???
