Does the 12ax7 in V1 have to be a balanced triode? Will a JJ ECC803s, even if not balanced work? Will it work as well? What's the difference?
Thanks

V1 does not have to have balanced triodes. You could try a ECC803S in that position. I think I have one of the newer Svetlanas in mine right now and it sounds pretty sweet. V2 should be balanced.

Thanks for the reply. The JJ ECC803s sounds terrific in the V1 position.
Since you're saying that V2 should be balanced, I can't use something like a NOS Mullard in V2? It has to be a balanced 5771?

A 12AX7 is a dual triode, which means it's kinda like 2 tubes in 1 bottle. Usually the tube in V1 of just about any amp serves 2 functions, i.e. 1 side acts as the first gain stage, and the other side is part of the tone circuit, etc. So, no V1 doesnt have to be balanced. The tube that should be balanced is the phase inverter tube, as both sides of the tube feed the power tube section of the amp, which in your case is V2 and should be a 5751. www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/index2.htmlThis website is Myles Rose's website, who is one of the experts and administrators on this forum. It contains a wealth of info on tubes, amps, and just about anything related to the two. Check it out, you'll learn alot. I sure did! Harold

The Ghia is a great vehicle for tube swaps- personally I'd recommend NOS tubes from www.tubedepot.com or www.kcanostubes.comMore reliable closer to spec and sound much much better Brett

Folks above are totally correct .... no balance is needed in V1 of just about any amp on the planet actually. Having a balanced tube will yield no advantage at all for the most part.
I agree with the post above mine .... KCA and Tube Depot are both KILLER vendors.
In my own Carmen Ghia I have a Telerunken in V1. I normally find Telefunken's too bright and actually dislike their use in just about any amp. But in the Carmen Ghia the articulation is amazing and the conjunctive filter allows me to get rid of the qualities that I dislike in the Telefunken yet keep the articulation and sparkle.
If the tube had not been a gift I would not have bought one today as they are too pricy for my taste (and income). I could buy three great different NOS tubes from Mike at KCA for the cost of one Telefunken (if it was a tested, real, NOS good one and not a pull). In the Carmen Ghia that would give me three great front ends as the CG is so responsive to tube changes. V1 is all there is until you hit the phase inverter. You don't have a lot of pots and loops to get in the way either.
