I'm just wondering if the guys who say the V30 is THE driver for the Ghia, are playing predominantly cleaner, neck pickup stuff, and if so, what the guys who use OD's for classic rock, bridge pup tones think of the Ghia/V30 match-up......also what is the recommended driver for the Ghia for overdriven tones if not the V30?

I ran my Ghia with an old beat V-30 and loved it. basic roots music stuff with some dirt and grit. worked great with a Tele for me.
Hit the TuTone myspace in my sig and most of those tunes are ghia>V-30, Teles, Strats and a PRS in a few spots. If ya want I can email you a bluesy tune clip that is a Strat straight in to the Ghia Cranked>V-30.

I use a closed back 2x12 with a V30 & G12H30 combo with my Ghia and run it as my dirty amp. I can also get great cleans from the rig but at pretty low volume. I plan on picking up a 1/2 open 1x12 for the Ghia soon and I will most likley use a V30 in it as well.

I also have a Heritage G12H30/V30 combo in a THD cab. I previously had a Greenback reissue in place of the V30 and I think I liked it better, but it's a very close call. The V30 is louder than the GB, but is a bit rattier when used with my Eternity. The cleans are just beautiful with the V30 however, which prompted me to start this thread. I run the Ghia as my wet amp in a wet/dry setup. The other amp is a Fuchs Lucky 7 through a G-Flex loaded with Mesa MC90's. My only issue is that I don't like the Ghia by itself as much as in the 2 amp rig, where I still like the Fuchs very much by itself.
I intend to try a Heritage G12M in place of the V30 at some point, although I will still have the efficiency issue to contend with. I always mic the G12H30 in the THD, so it's not an issue out front.

I love the V-30. As a matter of fact the Zendrive through the V-30 sounds very EJ like.. It has a really warm distinct tone to it. Sounds awesome...

It could be that the used V30 I bought on TGP may need some time to break in....especially pushing it with 18 watts. I'm pretty surprised that there hasn't been at least one negative response so far!
I wasn't horribly impressed with the Zendrive and ended up selling mine after a couple of weeks, but my rig has changed considerably since then, (didn't have the Ghia at that time), so maybe another listen is in order....if I can find one! I'm a big fan of EJ's tone for sure! The Eternity is a bit bright with the Ghia, but is perfect with my Fuchs.

Hey RGB, Tone is so subjective, not surprised there are no negatives. I wanted more bottom than the V30 provided with my ghia combo. I have a limited set of speakers to experiment with but liked the G12H better than the V30. My fav is a 1x12 closed back ported cab with the ghia as it gives it that bottom I was seeking. IMO a ZBest and ghia are a wonderful match.

I tend to prefer the G12H30 so far too....and I prefer the punch and low end of closed back cabs as well, but I just bought an open backed cab here on the forum, (because it was cool looking and matched my Ghia...not too bright!), so I'm looking for a good match-up with that cab. My THD is a great cab too, but so far I seem to like the G12H/G12M combo better than the G12H/V30 for crunch to overdriven tones. I also have an Eminence Wizard and a Cannabis Rex to try in the new cab so I'll let you guys know how it goes.

I've had a 112 Ghia combo with a Vintage 30 for about a month, and I think the speaker sounds great. It sounds awesome clean, and it sounds perfect with OD/distortion pedals. It is the standard speaker for the Ghia combo...

I use a V30 in an Avatar cab with my Ghia head. In my opinion it has a HUGE low end, fine with a Tele but woofy with a 335. Then again, I think the Ghia is a LOUD amp. I never was a 4x12 type guy. ;D

Also I've read that it's ok to run a 16 ohm driver in the 8 ohm tap with the Ghia and just want to confirm with you guys that it's not an issue.
Thanks for all of the response, guys!

Hey RGB, You won't harm the amp with a load greater than the output imepdence, i.e. amp 8 ohm output - 16 ohm speaker load. You might notice less volume and different breakup characteristics. I suspect you're running a G12H 16 ohm speaker. No harm done...

Thanks for the info,drew.
I actually just picked up a nice unloaded open back 1x12 from Squeallydan here on the forum and I have a variety of 16 and 8 ohm drivers to try out in it. So far I have: 8 ohm Mesa MC90, 8 ohm Emi Wizard, 8 ohm Cannabis Rex, 8 ohm G12H30, 16 ohm Greenback reissue, 16 ohm UK V30, and a 16 ohm Scumback H75 LHDC.
Anyone with experience with any of these drivers with the Ghia....your comments are very much appreciated!
