Hey there Rx Es players. I just bought a Stangray on eBay - come in today! Was wondering how the Stangray differs from the Rx ES, which sounds like a very attractive amp to me. BP uses both, maybe I need both too! Not really a country player, though. Play old style rock and roll, but love to rock through '60s Vox AC30's and '59 Bassman cranked up. How's the Rx ES compare ton these old amps? Thanks for your insights.

I own both. The Ray is a much cleaner and thicker sounding amp. The RXES is more like a fender to my ears than the Stangray. If you can, buy the Dr z video. Brad Paisley plays both of them back to back.

True, BP does play them both back to back in the DVD. But since the sound you hear on all of his segment is part lapel mic on his person and part camera mic, (of the amps apparently going through a P.A.) it's hard to clearly hear and comprehend the subtleties of each amp.
It's still cool that we get to hear him rip on these amps, but the quality and type of audio presented on the video are just too muddled and the mics are somewhat overwhelmed. My 2 cents.
I am sure lots of people on the forum have both amps though, and can help describe the differences between the two amps better than I could. Personally, the Rx. ES sounds great, but for me is more power than I need- I prefer the Rx. Jr.!

I have both here. The Stingray (I have one of the early models with that name) is simply incomparable. Nothing sounds exactly like it. But if I wanted an amp that could get as close as possible to the 'ray while offering a pallet of many other tones, the RXES is about as close as it gets. With a Tele, I can make the RXES sound so close to the Stang Ray that you wouldn't know it if I didn't have one sitting right there next to it. But with the boost switch, and with the volume wide open, the RXES is a rock MONSTER. Thick, rich, creamy overdrive. Yet unlike the SRZ or Remedy - the RXES has its own sound to me. Honestly, I don't see how Dr. Z does it. Every Z amp I've owned is amazing in its own right. The RXES does not disappoint. If you want to hear what I'm talking about, check the very first clip on my RXES gear page. Then scroll down to hear the gainier tones.

I came so, so Close to buying an RX ES. Thank goodness I didn't. No pun intended it's just that I heard the RX's are so LOUD and tht's scary cause My Ray through a 1x12 Gold Is LOUD! I like the Breakup it gives when cranked but , I think the Docs Wattage ratings are from Mars, 30 watts Ray 45 with the RX ES? More like 50/65! ;D I use my Ray for ROCK!!! and It does Just That! I use a Head and 1x12 cab and matching 2x12 Z Cab Both Amazing. The RXJr is on the someday list! I want a MV on my Stangray!

I had the opposite experience. I sold the Stang Ray and got an RXES. Being a former RX Jr owner, I loved the tones I was able to coax, but always wanted more cleans. I play with a loud band, so I was running up against it quickly. I loved the Stang Ray, dont get me wrong. Its two strikes against it for me was that it was a 2x12 combo cab (HEAVY!!!) with Blues, and I wanted a touch more control of the mids via a dedicated knob for mids, not just Tone.
I am happy with my RX ES. Right now, in Head/Cab config with the Z 1x12 covert cab with a V30 in it. Love it so far. May play with some speakers like a Gold or a Tonker or a Silver Bell. I am getting ready for it to go to Brent for the MV mod, so I can go from RX Jr volume to blowing the front row to the back row on demand. I love the flexiblity.
LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!!
Cant go wrong with either IMHO. But for me, the RXES just fits perfectly, and I can dial in the sweet spot for clean, and use pedals for MEAN.

When I was picking out my Z amp, I got to play almost every Z amp in a store all to myself. I was looking for something Voxy, so the top three was the MAZ, Rx ES, and the Ray. I played those 3 back to back comparing them several times. To me, of those 3, the MAZ was least Voxy, the Rx ES was more Voxy, and the Ray was the most Voxy. The Rx has the closest sparkle to the Ray without actually being a Ray. It also has more dirt than the Ray. The tone controls allow more flexibility than the Ray. All that being said, I walked out with the Ray. The Ray is cleaner and thicker and I preferred that. So it's all about your preference. They are similar but those are the differences that I heard.

Had a couple Rays, had an RXES and now an RXJR. IF I had unlimited resources, I'd have a Ray and an RX. The Ray is an amazingly beautiful amp. But there is something about the RX and its precussiveness that I really like, too. The RX gives you "close" to the Ray beauty, plus you also get the RX's goodies. Also depends on your preferences. Not a right or wrong answer.
