6545 owners,
I've been contemplating getting a 6545 head. I love the idea of a great clean on one side and a Marshally OD on the other. I've also given some thought to an appropriate 4x12 cab, but have been considering a unique one to go with my RxES head (EL84s) and with a 65 Amps Marquee head (also EL84s) that I'd like to pick up. 65 Amps makes a ported 4x12 cab with two G12H30s and two alnicos, either blues or golds. My experience is that the alnicos work best with open back or ported cabs and with EL84 tubes. How would such a cab sound with the 6545 running into it? Would I still get the Marshall sound on the SRZ65 side with the ported cab and alnicos? Or does it work best with a more traditional Marshall-type cab (closed back, ceramic speakers like V30s or Greenbacks)?
Thanks for your insights.

I've sort of been wondering the same thing - I never did get a cab for my 6545 but I've been churning the idea of a 2x12 with Golds in it. I'm certain that the 45 side would be glorious, I just don't know what the 65 side will sound like. I should stick it on my 2x12 with blues (heavily Airbraked) to see what it sounds like, but I'm scared of blowing them up.

Yeah, that's the quandry - the pairing of the KT45 with the SRZ65 is a great idea, but you kinda want to take full advantage of the clean on the one side and the raunch on the other by pairing each with appropriate speakers. Having to choose a single cab for both sides seems to me to necessitate some compromising. Re: blowing up the Blues, that's why I'm considering only the Golds or the 30W or 50W Webers. Any other opinions on these questions from other 6545 owners or interested Z-heads??...

I am running Weber Alnico Thames speakers in a closed back 2-12. I have not had any issues and always get compliments on the tone this grouping produces. Of course the Thames are 60 Watt Alnicos so no worries on blowing them up.

I haven't had mine long, so the jury is still out, but: I two 1x12 cabs. One has a Weber Blue Dog and one has a Texas Heat. I've been running them both, but I tried just the Texas Heat by itself (it is in a closed back ported EarCandy cab) and it sounded pretty darn good. It's probably not the most transparent speaker, but I like a little edge on my cleans. That speaker lacks a little low end with my 2xEL84 amps, but the 6545 has a LOT of low end and does well with that speaker.
Now, if I was looking at a new speaker cab for the 6545, I'd look hard at the Weber Silvers or, if you want something more transparent, one from his high power power line.

Hey,
I've got a 6545 head on the way. I'm wondering about speaker/cab options. I have a 2x12 with a Weber silver bell Alnico and a Blue dog Alnico (both 50w). Will I be happy with that setup and the 6545? It's a closed cab (Fender Tonemaster Cab). I have considered swapping cabs for an open back. I also have a open back Z 2x12 with Celestion Blues but that probably wouldn't stand up to the power of the 6545. My last option, w/out spending any more cash, is a vintage 30 and a g12H30 in the tonemaster cab, but I haven't been particularly fond of that setup with my RxES (or Stangray for that matter). I've got all the Vox tones I could imagine with the 2 EL84 heads. I'm looking for more old school rock/marshall tone from the new head. I usually don't get a lot of speaker distortion because I use an Airbrake and keep the volumes lower. Any thoughts/comments appreciated.
Thanks,
Brian

I actually talked to Ted about that combo of speaker before. He indicated that the Blue & Silver would be a very articulate and smooth sounding combo. So I would think that if you are looking for Smooth and Articulate then you should be fine.

Smooth and articulate is awesome with the RxES. I'm wondering if that will be "raw" enough for the 6545? I guess I'll just have to be patient and give it a try.
Thanks for the response Paul!

If you had the ceramic versions of the Blue/Silver it'd be smooth, balanced, AND raw. The dual alnico setup is pretty smooth/compressed.
Try this: put a G12H30 and Blue Alnico in one of the 212 cabs - try an openback for starters. Combo works great with the 6545...get the compression of the blue with the edge/tight low end of the ceramic. If you're in a gig situation, you can mike up both speakers and the sound guy can bump either a bit depending on what you're playing (country/pop, push the blue; rock, etc, push the g12h).

Thanks for the input! I'll try the G12H30 with the blue. It'll probably be later next week before the 6545 arrives. Can't wait to plug it in! I'll let you know the results.
Thanks again.

Sounds great with my stock Z Best cab (V30/H30).

I have 3 cabs that I've run my 6545 through. A 4x10 open back w/ eminence ramrods, a 4x12 closed back w/ heritage greenbacks, and a ported 2x12 w/ 1 g12h30 and 1 vintage 30. They're all very different sounding and are great in there own way. The 4x10 has a lot of bass, really loud, and has probably the best clean on the 45 side - balanced open, but nice and bright. The 65 side still sounds huge with a real rock tone. The 4x12 has much more break-up on the 45 side, not nearly as loud, more compressed sounding. On the 65 side it's a great classic rock n' roll sound - and I don't worry about stepping on the bass player. With the 2x12 it's a real precision sound, more modern, more sizzle on the 65 side, and spank on the 45 side - not my favorite, but I could see for some people it could be perfect. Hate to give the somewhat opinionless post, but they're all really different, and great in there own way. I've played through the 4x12 mostly since I got it (6 months ago or so), but lately I've been thinking about going back to the 4x10 for while.
