This past Monday was quite an exciting day. I made the trip to Third Street Music in Marietta, Ohio to play some Z's for the very first time. I highly recommend Third Street Music - Matt and Chris were incredibly accommodating and helpful. The Ghia and Maz 18 & 38 all blew me away, and I actually came quite close to walking away with a Z28. In the end, though, I pulled the trigger on the Monza.
Not to be all dramatic, but... wow.
In case there is anyone reading this who is considering the Monza, I have to re-state what has been said so much here - this amp is LOUD. Despite how many times I read that on these forums, I kind of thought everyone meant it was loud just for its size. No. It is not just loud for a 1x10. I cannot imagine not having a brakelite. I have rehearsed for two days now with the amp, and even with a loud guitar player with a 4x10, and a drummer who basically aims to break a stick, drum or cymbal per song, measures must be taken to reel this baby in.
The amp has responded very well to my Firebird, which has a Rio Grande Babybucker in the bridge pickup. I have had a blast letting my guitar's volume knob handle the dynamics - despite the amp's reputation as a fiendishly high gain machine, it cleans up incredibly well for me using the knob. I can't wait to get my Strat back to hear the Fralin Vintage Hots through this amp!
Does anyone use any fuzz with the Monza? I'm looking to get rid of my now-irrelevant OD pedal and try some fuzz for the first time. I don't know if the Monza's gain would make it tougher to find a complementing fuzz? I'm not really looking for anything super saturated, just mainly for texture on leads and the occasional big, rediculous power chord. Any suggestions?
