I’ve got a Carmen Ghia 2x10 combo that I like a lot. My local store just got a Z open-back 1x12 cabinet (w/Vintage 30) in stock, though, and I’m wondering how it would sound as an extension speaker along with the two 10’s in my combo. Has anyone tried this particular combination, or mixed 10” and 12” speakers in general?
If I do want to use this setup, what’s the best way to rig it? I was imagining I’d use a Y cable out of the 4 ohm jack, since I believe both the 1x12 and the 2x10 cabinets are 8 ohm. I’m not sure if this is the best way to go about it, though.
I’m curious to hear others' thoughts…

You've got the right idea on how to do it. I think it would sound good. Bring your amp to the shop and try it.

That combination does sound good together... I have a GHIA 2x10 and a Z 1x12 also and it sounded nice... the Z 10's and the 12" celestion g12-h30 really seemed to balance well and sounded full.... but I can't run it this way now cause I put a Weber 16 ohm alnico silver bell in the 1x12 for a change and it sounds awesome.....

So, let me get this right. The Y Cable is a male out of the 4ohm tap, going to 2 females ends. Hmmm. I always wondered how folks did that. Thanks JGleaton for posting the picture of your back side! :-)

Thanks JGleaton for posting the picture of your back side! :-) your welcome... ;D and it's my BEST side too... which really doesn't say very much good about my other sides... thats my homemade cord in the pic but Todd at pro cables n soundmakes a very good one I use now... it's a little more but very high quality. he also gives Z members a discount... Thanks for the feedback guys.
I tried the setup I described above—sort of—yesterday. The store didn’t have an appropriate Y cable, so we just ran the 12” out of the 4 ohm jack. Not exactly dangerous, I know, but hard to know whether I was really hearing the best possible sound. The setup did sound nice, but between the cable issue and the tiny room I was trying it in, it was hard to get a good feel for what was really going on.
I played around with the 10” vs. 12” cabs by themselves, though, and I really liked the extra tonal options the 12” gave me. I wouldn’t want to dump the 10’s by any means, but I could definitely see choosing one vs. the other for certain sounds, particularly for recording. So that might be enough of an excuse for getting the 12” cab anyway.
In the meantime, I ordered one the Y cables mentioned above, and when that shows up, I can do some more experimenting.

For a quickie deal just go to Radio Shack and get the hard plastic thing they sell. Mono or Stereo would work. If you ever hear one of the speakers cut out shut the amp down.

That's like the Radio Shack thing but probably better made. That wouldn't be hard to do!

If you are in the market for a hotplate, it has 2 speaker outputs and a line out. I guess it is an expensive y cable. I actually played my ghia 2x10 combo with the internal speakers and an old Ampeg 2x12 not sure what the speakers are, but it sounded huge. Infact, the Ampeg 2x12 combo souded really nice by itself(I forget the model).

Paul,
I had your Marshall cab for a little while today. TOO HEAVY!
mdbeh,
I tried the Ghia 2x10 combo with my used -new to me- Kendrick 1x12 open back cab. It has a Kendrick 12" black frame speaker (huge magnet). The kendrick definitely has a good amount of bass and mellowness to counter the bright 10's in the Ghia combo.
They both sound great on their own, but together, it takes on a full sound. I might try a vintage 30 in the kendrick - might also sound good.

Oh yeah!
Paul,
Scituate was awesome! It was also a damn good surprise to be able to stand right next to the stage for Edgar Winter and Rick Derringer. Free Ride and Frankenstein will always kick some arse. Man can That guy play the sax. I was sitting on the side of the stage so I could see Derringer's settings on his pedalboard. - so cool!

So... armed with the proper cabling, I finally tried the Ghia 2x10 combo with an extra 12. (jgleaton, thanks for the Pro Cables n Sound recommendation--along with the Y, I got a few of their speaker cables, and they're ridiculously well-made. Thumbs-up!)
All I can say is... wow. It sounded huge! I was worried it might sound phasey or smeared, but it didn't at all. It really seemed like the best of both worlds, with the sweet, compressed mids from the 10s, and the 12s adding depth and filling in the edges.
For now, my 'extension speaker' is the Jensen Special Design in my Deluxe Reverb reissue. But I think a Z open-back 1x12 is in my future.
