I managed to pick up a used Z-28. ;D The seller sent me an e-mail with delivery confirmation and anxiously I checked it's progress. I noticed the destination for shipping was somewhere in CA and I'm in IL. Hmm... It's all worked out now, hopefully, but I'm going to have to wait a few days longer.
I was hoping to use it this weekend at a gig but that's not going to happen now. I'm hoping this will fit the bill better than my Maz 38 for the type gigs I play.
The Z-28/speaker thread seems to indicate that the Greenback or Weber copy to be the choice...anyone ever try a Z-28 through a Cel Gold? Or, through a closed back cab with any speaker?
Sorry for the ramble, but I'm just passing time waiting for my Z-28...

I played mine through Bentop's cab with 2 Golds once at the PNW Z fest. It was very nice. When I play mine through a 1x12 these days it is a closed back with a 50 watt ceramic Blue Dog. Still like it best with American voiced speakers.

Joel -
Thanks for the K and back at ya. I hope it's as cool as I think it's going to be and fits the bill as I desire it to. My fingers are crossed.
ridgeback -
So probably something like a Weber 12 150 or 125 would be better , in your opinion?
How do you like the closed back vs. open?
Thanks.

before you buy do yourself a favor and check out if you can a Eminence RedFang. I think it sounds great with a 28 and can easily handle the power. I think it could handle the MAZ but thats annother area. I have had celestion blues, the reissues, I had the real ones in the 60's...had no clue what they were...lol Anyway I like the fang as well if not better than the blues. the speaker just sounds good, its musical , fairly loud although I have a tonker that is very lound and I think they are rated the same db...could be the alnico / ceramic thing or the speaker is a bit loudness overated. In any event, I believe that its worth an eyeball. I tried the vin30-too "broken glass" I thought. G12H , not bad but a bit laid back on the higher end and almost too bassy... eminece legend, older model....good sound I liked it but I like the Fang much better. your milage will no doubt vary... I like changing speakers much more than i liked changing amps, just took me way too long and way to much $$ to figure that out. It always suprises me just how much a few tubes, and a different speaker can change the way an amp sounds...in several instances its like its a whole new amp the difference is that pronounced. Its all part of getting whatever that sound in your head is to translate into actual music. YMMV

First, I'll fess up and say that I'm biased. Ted's 12X150X speakers are my overall favorites. I have 5 of them in various flavors.
My favorite 1x12 with the Z-28 was a 25 watt 12F150B in an open back cab but I now have that speaker in a 2x12 open back cab matched with a 25 watt 12A150W. The Z-28 sounds great with this cab and speaker combo.
This was my first closed back cab and I have found the closed back to be much pickier about speakers. It works very well with the Blue Dog but I may eventually open up the back or make it into a convertable so I can put pretty much any of my speakers in it (I experiment with speaker swapping every 6 months or so to keep things fresh) It's probably just me but I think I just prefer the "airer" sound of open back cabs to the more focused and thumpier closed back.
