I tried this the other day and I was surprised how great the Mazerati sounds for slide. We got to talking about it in the Mazerati section there and I agreed to make a clip if I could get my act together enough. I have no editing ability right now, so this is just as it came in the recorder - all 12 megabytes of it. It starts with the Humphrey Audio Atom Smasher comp turned on - you'll hear it go off and you can judge for yourself the difference. Then somewhere in there I turn it back on - going on you don't hear the same step function that you hear when I turned it off, so it's sort of a mystery. Sorry about the size, and in the words of Randy, "Dawg, it was sort of pitchy - I'm not sure if it worked for me." Mazerati SlideVolume Dimed Tone around 11 o'clock PRS > Comp > Mazerati > THD Hot Plate -16db > Z 2x12

Schweet Steve! E's tuned down to D?

Schweet Steve! E's tuned down to D? Thanks. Nawp - I use open E for slide work, after I heard that Duane did it that way. Seems to work ok for me - I'm easily confused by multiple tunings, and open E really is the same as standard tuning when you think about it.

Yeah dangit, I realized that after I listened again and heard that chord in the middle that wouldn't have been there if you'd just tuned the E's down. I'd try some different tunings but I know where the notes are in std tuning...open tunings just seems to mess me up!

The cool thing about Open E is that a blues standard can be played all on a single fret, just switching to different strings for the notes of your solo. For me, it's the best open tuning. I've tried all the others - ack! Can't get there from here...

Nice playing Steve - too bad you can't make it to Z-fest. Would love to hear more from you!

Nice playing Steve - too bad you can't make it to Z-fest. Would love to hear more from you! Yeah, I wish I was coming too, but reality bites sometimes. The thing is, with my ears the way they are, I can't really jam very well any more (can't hear the changes) and it prevents me from being much of a conversationalist (what?) so I suppose I'll sit here and take in Z-Fest 2010 from your posts.

Thanks. Did you notice the comp shut off at 1:13? Oh yeah i noticed but, the clean sound still had the tone! I think I liked it a lot better without the comp. I bet if the amp was full volume in my recording space (instead of choked down to -16 db) there would be a LOT more sustain happening. I'll have to try that one of these days when the wife is out...

Steve - very nice clip there. One question, do you like the hot plate better than "Z" attenuators?

Steve - very nice clip there. One question, do you like the hot plate better than "Z" attenuators? Actually I had my Airbrakes both tied up in other setups and didn't want to disturb those. The Hot Plate is a very capable attenuator, but it has the disadvantage of having to match it to the output and cab impedance - so if you have a bunch of cabs at different impedances, you'll need several different Hot Plates. I have three here - one for 4 ohm setups, one for 8 ohm setups, and one for 16 ohm setups. THD also makes one for 2.7 ohm setups. At about $300 a pop, you can see they get pretty spendy real fast.
