I own a Route 66 and just love it but there are many times when I would like a more American Reverb Deluxe type of tone for blues. I like the clean tone of the Z-38 very much. I like the fact that it is the same linear format as the 66 This is a Dr. Z design that I feel is very underestimated. The other guitarist in my band has a real 1965 Fender Super Reverb in perfect working order with original power tubes and the Route 66 makes it sound small and wimpy in terms of bigness of tone and bandwidth I guess you'd call it. My question is this. Does the Z-28 break up more than the Route 66 when you crank it or is it about the same do to the similarities in the circuit? The Arlen Roth clips on YouTube with the Z-28 are gorgeous but I don't he never cranks it, It sounds pretty clean. I would love to hear a clip of the Z-28 cranked with a Strat so I can decide if this will be my third Z or not. Thanks, Alex

Z-28 breaks up more. Very old-skool Marshall tones when it does. Lovely...

There are 3 clips on Dr Z website (Gibson Les Paul, Strat and PRS). The clip from the PRS player sounds fantastic. You can find more Z-28 clips on proguitar.de. There are clips from a head, 2-10 and 4-10 combo always played with a Strat clean and heavy as with a Les Paul too. Go to the section "Audio Demos". There you will find those clips. Hope this helps. Here are some Z28 clips using a Lentz SSL and Fat Boost. It is not totally cranked but may give you an idea. I really like how it breaks up and comparing the Z 2x10 vs. the 1x12 Greenback makes a big difference. All Over You - 1st lead break, using a Fat Boost and a 2x10 cabinet, V - 2 o'clock, T - 1, B - 11 Little by Little - using Fat Boost and 1x12 GreenBack same amp settings. cdbaby.com/cd/houndstoothThe other leads you hear on these clips on this site are the Maz Jr.

Thanks guys, that helps a lot. I think it's time for a Z-28 and damn maybe a Lentz Strat to boot. I already have the Z 2-10 cab and I bet the Clark Gainster pedal I just got would kill with those sparkling 6V6 highs. I am not expecting the bass to be quite as tight as the Route 66 but if it's close I'll be happy. Thanks so much, Alex

I think you will like the Z28 with the 2x10. I am surprised how well the bottom holds together. In fact in a lot of our gigs I still use an Airbrake with the 2x10. The 1x12 Greenback breaks up earlier than the 2x10s and doesn't quite hold the bottom together as well.
Enjoy the Z28.

Thanks so much, Alex Z-28 + 2x10 cab + a drive pedal = ;D ;D ;D I find the above combination works well with all my guitars (Tele, Super Sports, H150 and Strat) .... rock on, eh! Joel
