Hopin' that somebody can help me understand the differences or running a '28 with the open back 2x12 as opposed to Z-best 2x12 (70s rock, blues-rock, jazz-blues, and country-rock tones) Saw a local posting for the open back 2x12 and need help before I let my g.a.s. get the better of me. cheers, eh Joel

Closed back cabs are more directional.
Open back cabs fill the room/stage better.
if your cab is not mic'ed, the open cab will sound superior IMO....but I much prefer open back cabs.

The closed back cab is gonna push the air out the front more because of the design, but won't breath like the open back. The 28 has 2 distinct sounds in it from what I recall when I had mine. A nice Fender Deluxe kinda tone and a Marshall vibe when cranked. I would think that if you want the Marshall side of the amp to come out more go with a Z-Best cab. It will rock! And of course open back for a nice Fender tone. I know there are a lot of great Marshall's that were used with open back cabs, but I grew up with the sounds of 800's and Marshall 4X12's so that's the sound I associate with Marshall. But if you got a open back cab and put some greeny's in it I'd be willing to bet it would kick some serious behind too. From the genre's listed in your post I would think that an open back might be the right choice for ya.

You could always get a deep open back cab - almost the best of both worlds. The Avatar 212 (not the vintage style) has a real closed back meat to it, but really breaths like it should as an open back. Most folks think it's closed back from the tone out front.

I use a vertical 212 pine cab with three removable panels. I like the 1/3 closed back (top 1/3) the most. I find the bottom end is fuller and overall sound more woody. I find the treble is less affected than the bottom end when taking off panels. If you have plywood cab they are very dead and upper midrange biased so open is better for more bottom. I always have someone stand about 20 feet away and tell me how the sound changes with our without the lower panel(s). It only takes a minute or two during sound check. I played a big club with a raised stage wooden floor and the bottom end was huge. I had to raise the cab off the floor and put 2/3 of the cab back on. Another small joint was ceramic floored and was so bright it was like an airport washroom. I took all the panels off and used my metal pedal case to reflect sounds up toward the stucco ceiling. One gig we laid down two wooden tables behind the cab to bounce sound forward. The closer the tables to the cabs the more bass we got (20 foot test). Lots of ideas to be had!!

I have a 1-12 with a Red Fang and sometimes I use my Avatar BluesBreaker open back cab, actually you can move the panel around to change the sounds....for my ears, the open backs sound huge...specially the 3-12 ...serious coverage, not so much more volume but tons more of the sound...

Talk about the best of both worlds ... how about this? Hey Don, Do you know anyone using that cab? I think it's a great idea but last couple times I tried a cab with that design they buzzed at high SPLs.

Talk about the best of both worlds ... how about this? Interesting idea Don - thought that was only available for the 2x10 or 1x 12 .... on a side note - just did a price comparison with the open back cab I saw for sale, and it seems like I'm just as far ahead to order new ...... maybe the new-style 2x10 in blonde is the answer ;D cheers, eh Joel
