Just goofing around with the Z28 earlier and was blown away by the rock/metal tones this amp can crank.
1 strat and a couple different pedals I went quite convincingly from spank (Chicken-picken Nashville) to crank (Black Crows) to wank (Nuno/Malmsteem) w/o changing anything else.
Was quite surprised - Z28 was much more convincing than my Maz Sr w/that little exercise.
Thinkin' I'm really gonna dig this amp!!

I didn't need to hear this... I feel the GAS pains comin' on... I love the sound of my little Reverend Goblin w/ 6V6's and can only imagine how much bigger & better the Z28 sounds...

Basic setup: Nashville: Comp (or Comp + RC depending on how much grunt/girth) Crows: Comp + OCD or Xotic AC Hair Rock: Comp + BB
Quite a chameleon sound-bed.
And, the amp wasn't crazy loud - Volume @ 12:00 so it had a little breakup on its own (Bass @ 11:30, Treble @12:30). Ran it thru a 50 Watt Weber Silver Bell Alnico. Have a Weber 1225 Pre-rola on the way - can't wait to hear it thru that!!
I loved the first Z28 410 combo I ever plugged into and have been wanting a Z28 ever since - just wasn't in the cards w/the gigs (a little light on the horsepower for some of the stages). But, now...heh heh!! ;D
Have some local shows coming up - I know what's going out for those!!!

The last time I used my Z-28 (think I had a Route 66 pedal hitting the front end, with a Strat) it was downright Marshall-esque...in a Blackmore/Machine Head kinda' way...which was probably more AC30 than Marshall come to think of it...but you know what I'm sayin'! ;D Different pedals bring different things out, for sure.

That's one of the best things about this amp. It kicks as a small club rock amp. It really seemed to eat up anything you put in front of it, and has a huge tight bottom end for a 6V6 amp.
I loved it with a Fulldrive.

I Have used a Sparkle Drive, OCD V1, and a Zen Drive with my Z28. They all sound Great, and each imparts a different character. The amp is a chameleon, capable of many great tones with the right push. ArnieZ

Totally agree guys.
My favorite over the top rock tone with my Z28 is with my OCD and FDII stacked.

Has become, likely, my favorite Z along with the 6545... Edgy, bit more versatile than the Route66 w/lower volume to the sweet spot. Great clean tones and amazing driven tones. Sounds wonderful w/the natural drive. And off the hizzle w/a drive pedal kicked it...holy moly. And as flem said, it's super delicious thru a greenback...wow!

I just changed the speaker in mine to a RedFang and I really can hear the difference. I also changed the rectifier tube to a mullard and added a fan to cool things down. There is no doubt about it, this amp is a flat out musical amp. It is IMHO one of the best sounding amps I have ever heard. It really does sound that good...bad part is I forget that sometimes and think "maybe I'll trade her off and try something else"...then I go and listen or play something else and remember just how good this amp is. I would be hard pressed to find a fault with it...If I could have an option I would like to see it made with the same output as the 38 with a half power switch. But even that is not critical. I have had several marshalls including JCM900's and BluesBreaker a real plexi head and a few others and the 28 can hang in there pretty good with those boys...I use a barber Direct drive and a strat...mine seems to like single coils better than humbuckers.. Congrats on the amp I think you will be rightly impressed

awesome! thanks guys, i am about to get a 1x12 cab. when i test drove the amp, it was through a z-best w/2 gb's. sounded amazing! i am really trying to pick a 1x12 speaker that will work w/the z28, and the rt66. at least till i can afford another cab. i'm trying to tame the volume and still get a good rock sound. is this realistic? a single gb will not handle the 66. out of everything, i'm least informed on speakers. figured i'd ask some guys who would know. any recommendations? i am so psyched to get this amp! ;D thanks again - tommy

Drop Ted Weber a line - he's the king. Tell him what you're doing, what you're after for volume/tone and he'll offer up some great options.
Ted's speakers are killer - very toneful and very stout!

The Doc as well as lots of us other Z-28 users highly recommend a single greenback. Greenbacks aren't all that loud and a single one will be great for small club gigs. I also run mine into a black frame Weber 12a125s (30 watt)which is modeled after an old Jensen p12. It something a little different and more of an earlier rock n' roll/rockabilly tone rather than straight out rock like the ceramic greenie which is perfect for those classic 70's rock tunes.Ted does one with a pre-rola treatment.

I've run the Greenie with a 66, when running it I am wanting to cut volume, therefore no where near flat out, in that context the Greenback can and will handle the 66 and sound killer to boot...I have giged a 66>Greenie with the volume near max and the tones around noon without issue.
And another vote for Weber, Ted'll hook you up..I just happen to have a Greenie here that covers it for me.
It is my fav with the Z/28 as well.

hey thanks-
that is really good to know. i had no idea i could run the 66 with 1 greenie! i am really looking for a 1x12 cab 2 handle the 66 & the 28, in a lower volume setting. that is a really good option.
thanks guys for all the feedback, i also sent an email to weber.

DC here! I'll just have to state this again - before settling on the Route66 - I had decided I was going order the Z-28. ( I really liked the tone a lot - I even bought a pair of 6V6 EH tubes and put them into my Fender Blues DeVille before I sold it ) I started to have second thoughts listening to & reading about the Stangray. Then a bit later there was the Route66 - finally almost in a fit of panic I had to decide. Lo and behold the Route it was - that didn't turn out too badly either. ;D Cheers: Dixiechicken!

i told ted weber i was a blues to hard rock player, and i wanted a 1x12 speaker, that could be used with all of my Z amps, and cut down on volume. he said the 1265 ceramic was what i needed.
