I think the Z 28 has just a touch more headroom, but its pretty close. I gained a bit of headroom switching to the JJ's (6V6S)from the GT 6V6R.

I have both and my Jr has more headroom at the moment BUT they are different configurations, so YMMV.
MazJr 210 w/Doc's 10's - 12AX7 PI - GT EL84 #6's
Z28 112 w/Greenback - 5751 PI - GT 6V6 # 5's
The Z28 is listed at 22W, the GB at 25W 98db and is designed to break up a bit earlier. It is also using power tubes that are supposed to break up sooner, though the difference between GT's #5 and #6 can't be much.
The MazJr is listed at 18W but is using 2 70W speakers that I'm sure are about 100db and would be harder to break up.
If I put a more efficient speaker in the Z28 with something like 100 or 101 db and GT 6V6's with a #8 rating I'm certain the Z28 would have more headroom than the Jr. I put a pair of JJ 6V6S in the Z28 and they did add headroom but sounded closer to 6L6's to me, but I wanted this amp to break up a littler sooner.

I have both and I think I have learned that if your guitar volume is turned all the way up the Z28 breaks up pretty quick. With the Maz18 I would typically set up the amp for a clean sound with the guitar all the way up then use pedals to get an overdrive sound. The Z28 doesn't really work that way for me. They really are two different animals, but both sound great.

Headroom on the z28 is totally dependent on the position of the tone controls. Keeping the controls below 12:00 gives you more headromm fer sure! ArnieZ

+1 on the position of tone controls. That's what make the Z28 so versitile.

You are absolutely correct, with the tone at 12 o'clock its a different amp. Such a no brainer don't know why I missed it.
