I was making my "once every few months" trip to the local hardwood supply place a few weeks ago and ran into a Cocobola rosewood board that had a dragon's head in it just the right size for the faceplate of my Z-28 head. It still has some final finishing to go but I just got it installed with the piping so I thought I'd share. I don't have any plans to put the original Z logo on it but I was looking for any opinions on whether it would look good with a painted gold pinstripe outline of the Z logo or if it would be best left off. Due to the nature of the wood, I had to use an oil\wax finish so I'm not sure I could get paint to stick anyway. Anyway, here it is:

I liked the salt and pepper, but thats looks even better....gorgous!!! Hi Jim. I'm really enjoying the amp you sold me and I'm glad you approve of the change. I liked the salt & pepper also but when I saw this piece of wood, I couldn't pass it up. I like dragons.

I would leave it as is unless you had a way to perfectly "Brand" the Z logo in

If it were my amp I wouldn't cover that beautiful piece of wood, but i would buy a decent cover, be a shame if it got scratched.

Thanks for all of your opinions everyone. I appears to be unanimous for not covering up the dragon head with some kind of a a Z logo. It is a very nice piece of wood and the pictures don't really do it justice.
Flem, I got a nice padded cover as part of the deal when I bought the amp from Jim and I already had one of the Gator pedal bags for carrying my Ghia head so I'm covered (pun intended).
As it appears that my playing out days are pretty much over, I'm resigned to being a basement hack so there is not much chance of my amps being scratched or damaged.

Ridgeback that is an incredible looking piece of wood. Perfect like it is. I ordered my 18NR 1x12 with a maple pannel. It's bloned/oxblood. I thought mine was pretty but you have just made me jealous. If I can find a piece of wood that looks like that I will change it. Kudos.
Bob.

I'd love to see a picture of your blonde combo with the maple front. My Maz 18NR 1x12 is blonde\brown.

Sorry Ridgeback, don't have a digital camera. It's nice but the wood is only slightly darker that the tolex. It would look better with more contrast.

I would probably like the light maple panel with the blonde tolex better than a darker wood with more contrast. If you ever get a picture of your amp I'd love to see it. I admit I haven't looked but I'm pretty sure the baffle and front panel on the Z combos are dadoed in so I couldn't do a natural wood swap on my Maz like i did on the Z-28. When I got my Maz, I had to choose between the wood front panel or a speaker upgrade to the Cele Blue. I chose the speaker. I'm sure yours is a beauty.

I'll go against the grain. Beautiful wood, but I think it looks a bit "empty." I'd like to see it with the Z logo. Maybe you could scotch tape the Z logo on and take a pic just to get an idea of what it would look like?

Maybe you could scotch tape the Z logo on and take a pic just to get an idea of what it would look like? When I was first messing around with it I thought it looked kind of blank as well even though the wood was so beautiful. I taped a full size paper cutout of the Z logo on there but the solid logo centered in the middle just covered up too much of the dragon head. I may experiment with painting a very thin gold outline of the Z on there some day when I'm bored. I'm getting used to it with the plain wood front as time goes by and at this point I'm just having fun playing it. Thanks for the input.

If I am seeing the pic right, I think you might get a cool effect with a Z in the top right corner .... fire-breathing-dragon - Z-style? just a thought ;D

I hadn't thought of that one!! I'm sitting here smiling just thinking about what that would look like. Like Gandalf blowing the smoke sailing ship from his pipe. A unique idea to be sure.

Looks great. The figure in the middle keeps it from being too empty. With no Z logo the zebrawood box I've got mine in looked way too plain.

That Dragonhead woodfront almost looks like a close up shot of Jupiter and it's 300 year old storm. Stunning.

Thanks guys.
Tas, I see the Jupiter storm now that you mention it. Pretty cool. I have to admit I kind of take the wood front for granted now that it has been on there for a while. Thanks for making me take another close look at it.
Crikey, I see you are in Eugene. I had only driven through on I-5 before but got to spend a long weekend there while dropping my kid off at college a couple of months ago. What a nice town.

Its a beautiful piece of wood. However,I have to agree with JChance looks a bit empty...also if I'm being honest I'm not so sure it " goes" well with the black tolex...maybe its just me...

Honesty is a good thing and often in short supply these days. I tried it in my blonde Ghia head. It looked very nice there as well but I preferred the appearance of less contrast with the black. Different strokes. If I get bored some day I may still stick the Z logo on there but I've become pretty used to it the way it is.

looks great - maybe a small z on the faceplate to the left of the input jack, or to the right of the jewel light. ....everything goes with black.
