They're both 18 watt cathode biased el84 amps, so what's the big difference in tone/feel?
I know Myles has said they are such different amps, but can anyone tell me what the differences are?
Yes, I know the Maz has more tone controls and a master volume...but that's not what I mean.
Such things as 'aggressive...dark...bright...percussive...sustain...gain...'
...words like that might help more.
....anyone?

I've got a Maz 38 not 18, and a Ghia. I don't know quite how to describe the differences. They do sound quite different. Most people set their Ghia with the tone knob between 11:00 and 1:00. At that setting it's pretty bright, depending on your guitar and cable, and yet it has a nicely balanced low end. It's highs are bright and sweet, probably like a Maz jr with the cut all the way up. I usually have to turn the tone pot down a little. The Ghia has a very springy, bouncy output tube sound especially when the volume is up past 12:00. It'll distort like a mutha if you crank it. Volume is the same as other 18 watt amps. I think for anyone to really give a good comparison you'd have to have them both to a/b.

That's a great question as I am also trying to decide between the two as my next Z. My other Z is Rt 66 and I am looking for a good complement. Play mostly blues and blues rock and my main guitar sounds a little on the dark side with the 66. Thanks.

I have both. If I had to keep one, it would be the Maz Jr. If all I did was play at home or record with it, it might be a tougher decision. I just think the Jr. is more versatile for live situations.

I'm sure Kruzty is right about gigging. The Ghia is a really fun amp to have at the house. Reminds me a lot of a Tweed Deluxe, but modern.

I started a link on the Maz 18 page, and was wondering what the headroom factor/pedal front vibe is w/ the Maz 18 NR? Love my Ghia, but live it's not cutting it?! thanks...

I sold my Maz Jr for the Ghia. I do sometimes miss the sweet reverb and master volume of the Jr but I prefer the Ghia's rawer tone and lower headroom.
