I have a 2006 GHIA 2x10 combo and when I turn it on its sounds like an old AM radio hiss or slight crackle. THe noise goes in and out slightly, almost sounds like a TV turned on a channel that you dont get. What do I do?? thanks zach.lee@brandnewchurch.com

do u have old tubes to replace them with- firstly the preamp tubes one at a time, then the output tubes, so u can see if any particular one is the problem if not it may be the dreaded CONJUNCTIVE FILTER PROBLEM! an easy fix- see the threads under ghia about this ghias are simple beautiful and easily fixed all the best zach

are the preamp tubes the 12ax7's? Which ones do I get, are the output the EL84's? if so what brand do I buy? I would like the amp to break up a little quicker

yes the preamp tube is the first one- on the right looking from the back- should be a 12ax7 or 5751 if u want a little less drive next is the phase inverter- it drives the EL84 s - it splits the signal and inverts one side- 5751 is the correct one here or 12BH7 if u want clean headroom the EL84 s are GT ones recommended- u could go for a soft one- ask groove tubes i use a GE anos 12ax7 for the first tube and a GE nos 5751 for the phase inverter (pi) both from www.tubedepot.com- u can also trust kca nos- new old stock- u can also use anos- almost new old stock, which test up as new and werre used in undemanding situations and are cheaper

The general consensus around here is to use current Groove Tubes EL-84S for power tubes, experiment with valve 1 with various 12ax7's, a new old stock 5751, and a new old stock Rectifier (5Y3) or you could use a 5AR4 (I believe---someone correct me if I'm wrong on this one). I have heard that using a 5AR4 gives your a little more drive but shortens your other tubes life. Hope this helps

a 5AR4 is a lot hotter- here's a quote from our moderator, Myles: The amp was delivered to me with a GZ34/5AR4 rectifier. It was WAY too powerful for me, and had very fast and articulate rise times. Great for the rocker or high gain folks, but for blues, this was too much for me. This supplied a LOT more plate voltage, and voltage across the entire amp which was more than I needed. No sweat for this power supply or the amp though. Out came the GZ34 and in went an NOS 5Y3, and voila, a slower rise time all around, and a nice drop in level (about where my BF Deluxe Reverb sits in level at 6-7 this amp does it at 11:00 or about 40% up on it's volume control).
i like the 5Y3 that came with the amp- a nice nos one also the lower voltage equals easier overdrive but slightly less volume

I guess I will try to replace the 12ax7's first and then I will try the el84's
